Avatar: The Last Airbender, Netflix’s latest live-action series has finally ended with eight episodes. The series seems to have gone as quickly as it came, building up anticipation and leaving with a somewhat disappointed tone. While reviews have been mixed, fans have nonetheless appreciated it since it hasn’t thankfully repeated the disaster that The Last Airbender (movie) was.
Even though the initial episodes seemed somewhat disappointing, the entirety of it has been surprising and intriguing, to say the least. When it comes to the last episode, Avatar: The Last Airbender has not only redeemed itself to an extent but left viewers wanting more. So without any delay, here is what happens in the end.

What Happens in The Ending of Avatar: The Last Airbender
The Team Avatar is finally in Agna Qel’a hoping to master Aang’s (Gordon Cormier) water bending technique. But as fate would have it, the Fire Nation being Fire Nation, led by Commander Zhao gains the upper hand and a big battle ensues. He ends up killing the Moon Spirit, which takes away all the Nothern Water Tribes’ water-bending skills.
This calamity leads to the Ocean Spirit merging with Aang, leading him to turn into his insanely powerful Avatar state. Meanwhile, Princess Yue sacrifices herself to release the part of Moon Spirit within herself, thereby restoring balance to the world and the Water Tribe getting back their powers.
The Fire Nation suffers heavy losses as Whalezilla (Aang’s powerful Avatar state) wreaks havoc upon them. Amid the battle, Uncle Iroh sacrifices Zhao as he reveals to Prince Zuko that his quest to find Avatar was a sham, and tries to kill him. But since we don’t know if he is really dead, he might come back in the second season.
After Yue’s death restores the Moon Spirit, the Ocean Spirit returns and Aang becomes normal as the Fire Nation flees. Many warriors of the Water Tribe end up sacrificing themselves, including Hahn, and Master Pakku bestows Katara the master of Waterbending, ordering her to teach Aang.
The group then decides to head to the Earth Kingdom in search of a master to teach the young Avatar the Earthbending technique. Meanwhile, in the Fire Nation, Zuko is missing and it is revealed the fight with the Northern Water Tribe was just a distraction for taking Omashu down with the help of Azula.
What is The Sozin’s Comet?
Despite the increased presence of Sozin’s Comet in the original cartoon, Avatar: The Last Airbender hardly mentions it. The Comet is a comet that comes close to the planet’s atmosphere every 100 years, leading to the Fire Nation’s powers becoming virtually indestructible and unstoppable.
While the series avoids mentioning that such an entity exists, in the pre-credit scene Fire Lord discovers that the Sozin’s Comet will be upon them soon. As to how soon we don’t know, but if Aang does not master his powers quickly, the Fire Nation will soon be able to finish off their Hundred Year War with ease and succeed in conquering the entire world.
This signals that an epic battle is due in season two, possibly with the arrival of the menacing celestial object. However, it does not seem like the series will incorporate the arrival of the comet so soon, possibly waiting for another season as Aang still has a long way to go before he can become a true Avatar.
While the streaming giant is yet to confirm season two of the series, it is expected that it will shed light on Azula and her rivalry with brother Zuko. Furthermore, Toph and Ba Sing Se’s introduction with also potentially take up the majority of screentime in the yet-to-be-announced season.
