SUMMARY

  • Captain America wielded both of Thor's might weapons, Mjolnir and Stormbreaker during the final battle in Avengers: Endgame.
  • Thor may have taken Stormbreaker from Captain America to prevent him from succumbing to its overwhelming power.
  • The theory is based on Thor's warning in Infinity War that Stormbreaker's immense power could cause a weaker being's mind to collapse into madness.

Marvel fans will all remember the moment in Avengers: Age of Ultron when Chris Hemsworth’s Thor gave all the Avengers a chance to lift his mighty Mjolnir. While everyone else failed, Chris Evans’ Captain America, unbeknownst to others, manages to nudge the hammer just a tad bit. This moment made it all the more exhilarating when Cap finally wielded Mjolnir in Avengers: Endgame, proving himself just as worthy as Thor.

Even greater was the surprise when Captain America picked up Stormbreaker, Thor’s even deadlier weapon in Endgame. However, the surprise and amusement were short-lived when the God of Thunder asked Cap to use the little one, and as per one theory, it might be because he was trying to save Evans’ Steve Rogers’ life.

Was Thor Trying to Save Captain America’s Life by Giving Him the Mjolnir?

Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor is one of the strongest members of the Avengers. The God of Thunder, Thor has often shown off his incredible power while fighting some of the strongest creatures of the Marvel Universe, whether it is in the comic books or the MCU. What makes him even more iconic is his iconic weapons: the trusted hammer called Mjolnir and his axe, Stormbreaker.

While Thor can easily wield these powerful weapons, only Vision and Captain America from the Avengers have been worthy enough to wield them as well. Captain America easily using Mjolnir in the grand fight at the end of Avengers: Endgame will forever remain epic, for it was the first time that he managed to wield it after a brief stint in Age of Ultron.

Apart from Mjolnir, Chris Evans‘ Cap also manages to use the Stormbreaker, but Thor is quick to take it away from him. As per one theory, it might be because even though Cap is worthy of using both weapons, he cannot use the Stormbreaker for long since it is so powerful that it can possibly make him descend into madness, as per what Thor tells the Guardians of the Galaxy in Avengers: Infinity War.

Stormbreaker is not just another weapon, for the axe is an incredibly enchanted weapon forged from the neutron star at Nidavellir by the dwarves living there. Said to be the greatest weapon in the history of Asgard, it can even summon the Bifrost Bridge and severely injure Thanos and ultimately kill him in Avengers: Endgame.

Given its powerful origin, it is not a weapon that the average human, even Captain America with his super soldier serum-infused body can wield. This fact is backed by what Thor tells the Guardians of the Galaxy in Infinity War. When the Asgardian tells the Guardians that he is going to Nidadavellir to get a ‘Thanos-killing’ weapon, Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill asks him why everyone cannot have the same weapon, leading to Thor revealing:

You simply lack the strength to wield them. Your bodies would crumple as your minds collapsed into madness.

This statement alone shows the Stormbreaker had the power to cause severe damage to Chris Evans’ Captain America. This eventually becomes the reason why Thor doesn’t allow his fellow Avenger to wield the axe and gives him the Mjolnir. Although this theory remains unproven, it is nonetheless plausible and makes Marvel lore more interesting.
