The team at Obsidian just showed off an awesome looking gameplay deep dive from their upcoming fantasy action RPG Avowed, along with the game’s release date, via the first Xbox Direct livestream of 2024. The extended trailer shows the player using a combination of melee combat, ranged attacks, and magic to fight off anthropomorphic lizard creatures. One loadout will even allow players to dual wield 2 wands.

In Avowed, players will get the opportunity to make their own moral choices as they progress through the game. These nuanced decisions will have an ongoing effect on the adventure unfolding, for better or worse. The game will available to purchase and play this for Windows PC and Xbox Series X and Series S, although no concrete release date was given. It will also come to Game Pass on day one.

This looks like it will adequately tide fans over until the Elder Scrolls VI for Xbox users

The footage shown gives us a better idea of the fantasy setting of the Living Lands, where the game takes place. This promises to be a rich, detailed setting that players can explore, finding all sorts of quirky characters and hidden secrets. Companions will also be a feature, allowing you to build your own guild of warriors to have your back as you explore this hostile, plagued world.

Many may not realise that Avowed actually takes place within the same universe as the Pillars of Eternity games, which were also developed by Obsidian. Unlike Pillars of Eternity and Deadfire though, Avowed is played from a first-person perspective, with gameplay feeling closer to something like Skyrim. This will also extend to how the player will build up the character via a skill tree as they progress through the game.

Will Avowed fill the void left by Bethesda?

Obsidian’s expertise in building worlds with deep narrative themes and dynamic RPG gameplay has led many to compare the studio’s work to that of Bethesda’s. Given the fact that Starfield failed to meet the mark in the eyes of many gamers when it launched late last year, fans of the genre are hoping that Avowed will provide a more fulfilling and fleshed out experience.

Even before the disappointment that was Starfield launched, when The Outer Worlds dropped back in 2019, it was said that the Obsidian was able to outdo Bethesda at their own game. Even amongst diehard fans of the Fallout series, Fallout: New Vegas is often pointed to as being the highlight of the franchise, and that was the entry developed by Obsidian on behalf of Bethesda.

Avowed is going to be a big deal for Xbox fans in 2024.

Therefore, it is more than likely that Avowed will not only be enough to tide fantasy RPG fans over until the eventual launch of The Elder Scrolls VI, but it may even surpass it entirely in terms of quality. It is too early to tell for sure though. Regardless, Avowed looks as though it will provide a visually stunning experience with solid combat and an intriguing narrative involving a plague wreaking havoc across the Living Lands.
