After its release and tremendous success on PC and PS5, Larian Studios announced back in August 2023 that the popular D&D RPG title Baldur’s Gate 3 was in development for Xbox and will be coming to the console later this year.
Larian Studios has now confirmed that the game is on track to launch on Xbox consoles in December 2023. The confirmation comes after Larian Studios had teased an announcement as it celebrated Baldur’s Gate 3‘s nomination for Game of the Year at the Game Awards 2023.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Is Coming to Xbox This December
Larian Studios took to X/Twitter and announced that the game is on track for the planned December 2023 release and more details including the exact release date would be revealed at The Game Awards which is scheduled to be held on December 7, 2023. The post by Larian Studios read:
Xbox players, we hear you’re looking for more news on Baldur’s Gate 3. The game is on track for a December release.
We’ll see you at The Game Awards for the World Premiere™ of the exact release date.
This exciting news for Xbox players comes after the developer teased about the Xbox release and physical version of Baldur’s Gate 3 but nothing has been revealed about the physical version release as of now. Larian Studios asked players to keep an eye out for formal announcements a few days back. It stated, “Xbox fans, and fans of physical media, watch this space for a formal announcement. It’s going to be a busy week.”
Although the game got the collector’s edition when it was released on PC and PlayStation 5 back in August 2023, it did not get a physical disc but came with a digital code for players to redeem. Then there were rumors that the game would be getting a physical release in Japan but nothing of such sort has been announced so far but it’d be definitely great got get a physical disc.
While the players would now be relieved that Baldur’s Gate 3 is coming to Xbox consoles, earlier there were doubts that it would ever happen. Larian Studios had stated that it was facing issues in the development and split-screen co-op for the Xbox Series X version. Larian stated:
We have been unable to get split screen co-op to work to the same standard on both Xbox Series X and S, which is a requirement for us to ship.
However, Larian Studios eventually was able to figure out a solution after it met with Xbox boss Phil Spencer. Both Larian and Xbox came to an agreement, and it was decided that the split-screen would be removed from the Series S version of the game for it to release on the less powerful console and ensure that it runs smoothly. However, the game will support cross-progression.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has made waves since its release as it opened to rave reviews from fans and critics alike. The game has been praised for its immersive world and storyline and even reached 500,000 concurrent players on Steam in just a few days of its release.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has also been nominated for the Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2023 among other big titles like Alan Wake 2 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The game has recently won the Ultimate Game of the Year award, Best Storytelling, Best Visual Design, and a couple more at the Golden Joystick Awards 2023.
Baldur’s Gate 3 was also nominated for a bunch of other awards and voice actor Neil Newbon won the Best Supporting Performer award at the Golden Joystick Awards 2023. The game is also one of the top nominees at The Game Awards 2023 and is one of the favorites to win the Game of the Year.
