Barbie and Oppenheimer made 2023 a great year for original films as many of them managed to engage and surprise audiences. At the same time, the year also saw the worst year for the superhero genre, which dominated the market for many years.

2023 felt like the year for original films as many made a mark and impressed audiences. Many critics and film outlets have started to post the best films of the year lists as 2023 is soon coming to an end. Former US President Barack Obama continued his tradition of revealing his favorite films of the year, and he recently posted his list on Instagram.

The most surprising aspect of this list is the absence of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, who are both major award contenders. The two films are on most people’s lists, and it is shocking to see them missing from Obama’s list. On the other hand, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is included in the list, making it a huge win over the two films.

Other indie gems are seen in the list, including Celine Song’s Past Lives. Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers and Ben Affleck’s Air. He also highlighted three films under his production banner Higher Ground Productions and placed them in the list, namely Rustin, Leave the World Behind, and American Symphony.

Talking to Empire, the director claimed that the movie business is doing great and expressed happiness at audiences coming back to watch all kinds of cinema. He also pointed out that Oppenheimer is the most successful film in his entire career. He said,

“I’ve just made a three-hour film about Robert Oppenheimer, which is R-rated and half in black-and-white – and it made a billion dollars. Of course I think films are doing great. The crazy thing is that it’s literally the most successful film I’ve ever made.

“I’ve been doing this for 20 years, and in the United Kingdom, it’s my highest-grossing film. So, I feel great about the state of the movie business based on my own experience. But also based on seeing other movies break out, seeing audiences come back.”

In addition to the film’s huge commercial success, it is a major awards contender and is expected to win in many acting and technical categories at various award events. Fans of the director hope that he finally nabs an Oscar for Best Director for this film.
