James Bond Co-producer Barbara Broccoli is Proud of Daniel Craig’s Quantum of Solace

After the arrival of Daniel Craig‘s 007 in the Casino Royale, fans witnessed a change in direction for the iconic spy. The movie introduced a darker Bond with a modern, grounded story and bloodier action. It was a financially and critically successful film, leaving fans excited about where Craig’s story went next.

However, the next installment, Quantum of Solace, almost undid the immense hard work of its predecessor. The film remains one of the weaker entries in Craig’s filmography, with critics’ harsh reception contributing to its poor standing.

Quantum of Solace‘s underwhelming response was a contribution of several factors that went from production issues to changes in the franchise’s direction that didn’t yield great efforts as intended. However, franchise co-producer Barbara Broccoli has no regrets about making the 2008 movie and believed it to be “important” for the character’s development.

She told Slash Film,

I’m really proud of the movie. I think it’s part of the whole evolution of Bond. And I think after ‘Casino Royale,’ when he shuts down emotionally, the next step was going out for revenge.

She continued,

I think the story of that film is that revenge is an empty challenge. You don’t get any benefit from revenge. So I think it’s important in the whole history of the evolution of this character. I’m very proud of it for sure.

The 2008 James Bond film follows Bond after the events of the 2006 movie as he seeks revenge for the death of his lover, Vesper Lynd. During his revenge journey, he uncovers a sinister organization called Quantum.

The film concludes with Bond deciding not to kill Vesper’s former lover, Yusef Kabira, instead turning him over to MI6. This decision marks his growth and his move away from seeking personal vengeance.

Despite its revenge redemption arc, the movie could not stand its footing compared to Craig’s debut as 007. The film grossed over $591.6 million worldwide per the Numbers which was not far from what the Casino Royale earned $594.4 million at the global box office.

But the critics were far from generous in panning the second installment in the 007 reboot with Deborah Ross of The Spectator dubbing it as a “crushing disappointment.”

To be specific, the critic shared,

It is still a crushing disappointment. It has none of the emotional power, intelligence or stylishness of Casino Royale, and doesn’t even give itself the odd, knowing wink.

Even the titular actor admitted that the second film was like a troubling second album syndrome as he told in Apple TV’s Being James Bond documentary via Collider,

We had a writer’s strike. We had a script; it wasn’t completed, but it was nearly completed. The movie kind of works. It’s not Casino Royale, and that was always going to be… It was like, literally, troubling second album syndrome. In a way, we could not top Casino… It’s easy to say that. Of course, we wanted to top Casino Royale, but, you know…

Many reasons contributed to its mixed reviews revolving from an incoherent plot to a lackluster villain. The film’s narrative was criticized for lacking clarity, making it difficult for audiences to follow the story. Whereas, Bond hardly had any character development in the movie, unlike its predecessor, which made it more like a traditional action project than exploring his emotional journey.

The rushed and incomplete script further created trouble due to the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike, which clearly explained the underdeveloped story structure. In all, it might not be the worst Bond film ever made but remains an underwhelming project in the franchise to date.
