While in the past, the Hollywood industry was largely limited to the national borders of the United States, the influence and popularity of the industry have been the highest ever in modern times. Therefore, stars from all over the world are welcomed and celebrated in this melting pot, like Australian actress Margot Robbie, who has become one of the biggest names in the industry in a relatively short amount of time.

But while international film stars may receive the recognition and love they rightfully deserve, what makes an actor a star is their ability to adapt to the specifications of the character they’re about to play in front of the camera. Therefore, when Robbie was chosen to play the role of Barbie, she had not expected just how hard speaking in a whole different accent would be.

An actor should possess a lot of things that will ensure their rise to stardom through their performances, and one of the biggest factors that count in that is the ability to completely change yourself and inhabit the role that you are assigned. Therefore, many stars that aren’t native to the United States have somewhat of a learning curve to go through to appeal to the US audience, something that Margot Robbie and her Barbie co-star Ryan Gosling had to go through as well in their latest film.

In a recent interview with BBC Radio 1, both the stars were talking about their experiences working on the film directed by Greta Gerwig and how that experience impacted them. Along with that, they also revealed that being non-natives of the US, Robbie being Australian and Gosling being Canadian, they had to struggle with the classic American accent that many US Natives spoke in. While they had performed in these tones in the past, this film required all their dialogues to be fast-paced and snappy, which became a challenge. In the interview, the Babylon star said:

“Also Greta, like she really listen’s to the rhythm of the dialogue, and she wanted this, kind of like, you know, quick pace, and there are some lines where I am like ‘Ok, that’s a mouthful'”

Although it was a sizeable barrier to vault over, both the stars brought out their best linguistic talents forward and executed their roles to perfection.
