Zack Snyder is a controversial director as far as the DC fandom is concerned. While many fans look forward to James Gunn‘s DCU, there are still many fans who would want Snyder to return to the DC movies. Snyder directed Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Justice League in the DCEU before he exited the universe. His recent take on Batman has fans questioning if the director understood his characters in these movies.

During his appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Snyder explained how he came up with Ben Affleck‘s Batman persona in the movie. He drew attention to one of the scenes in the director’s cut of Justice League. In the scene, Bruce Wayne wakes up next to some girl and immediately reaches for his painkillers by his bedside table. He also has alcohol and wine stacked up in his room.

Snyder shared that Wayne is a playboy in the film because that’s how he deals with the huge trauma in his life. He further added that Wayne lives in a glass house with a clean aesthetic, but that’s all the things he has going well in his life. Snyder shared his understanding of the Batman character with Joe Rogan (via @readythearmada | Instagram):

In the Director’s Cut, he wakes up and there’s some chick in the bed with him from the night before. Because I always say, ‘Batman f*cks and forgets for sure. Batman’s a drunk for sure.’ Because he has huge trauma. You wonder why he’s a playboy. Because it’s a real thing. That’s a way to deal with trauma.

Snyder continued:

There’s the bit where he wakes up and there’s just painkillers on his bedside table. He just pops some and drinks some wine. To me, that’s Batman. He’s got a maple thorp above the bed. He’s got his glass house. He has an aesthetic that’s like clean but that’s all he does. That’s like his life.

While Snyder’s take may be applicable to a Batman that he re-invented, the comic book character is very different from Snyder’s portrayal. Snyder’s Batfleck persona was not at all relatable to fans who grew up reading the DC Comics.

Fans were not happy with how Zack Snyder perceived the caped crusader and brought him to the screen in the DCEU. One fan shared that Snyder didn’t fundamentally understand the character from the comics. Another fan mentioned that Batman doesn’t ever drink in the comics since he had to be always in control. One fan sarcastically asked whether Snyder knew who Batman actually was.

Another fan shared that Snyder confused Batman with Iron Man and tried to write Tony Stark’s arc for the DC character. One of the fans mentioned a comic book storyline in Justice League Unlimited where Batman was exhausted after acting like a playboy. Another fan shared that Snyder was describing “Bizarro-Batman”. Fan comments under the Instagram post read:

Snyder fundamentally doesn’t understand Batman – @radiantfall

Batman is not a drunk, in fact he doesn’t even drink. Alfred gives him apple juice so people think Bruce Wayne drinks. But batman is ALWAYS is in control. If only this guy read a comic. – @its_lucasmartinez

… does he not…? Does he not know who Batman actually is? – @theprimelightning

So he wrote batman as Tony Stark… how originally 😂 😂 😂 – @graveyardxlight

In Justice league unlimited there is a scene where Bruce has to act like a play boi and even that exhaust him, what is this guy talking, I’m not even a dc fan or batman and me knowing better than him is alarming for sure, glad dceu failed. – @izhaluck

Guy is describing Bizarro-Batman. – @403color

It wasn’t the only controversial take Snyder had about Batman. He further shared in the podcast that Ben Affleck’s Batman was a better choice than Christian Bale. Snyder shared that Affleck was the bulkier Batman and looked perfect for the part than Bale in Christopher Nolan’s movies.

Batman v Superman and other DCEU films are now available for streaming on Max and Netflix. Zack Snyder’s Justice League is available on Max.
