Chris Evans Claims Captain America Lacks a Unique Edge Like Batman

During an interview with Moviefone, Marvel star Chris Evans expressed his appreciation for the remarkable rewards that came with starring as Captain America in the MCU. Reflecting on his character, he also emphasized that the essence of a character lies in the substance provided.

However, upon comparing his role to the DC superhero Batman, he said, “You know, Batman has demons. Obviously, he’s a guy in a suit, but he has a lot of issues.”  Evans emphasized that while Batman’s demons give him depth and make him a complex character, it is something Captain America lacks.

“The problem with Cap’ that I found was that he’s just… he’s such a good guy. There’s nothing that he can’t put on his shoulders. The reason he’s chosen to be Cap’ is because of his ability to say, “I got this. There’s nothing you can throw at me that I can’t handle. I got it.”

He further mentioned how it is hard to find an edge to his character due to his ability to handle conflict with “maturely, rationally, calmly, intelligently.” However, he also shared that he was looking forward to seeing how the character would develop in future films.

Chris Evans Was Quite Content With Captain America’s Evolution

While he felt that his character lacked depth in the initial stages of the cinematic universe, Chris Evans later shared that he was quite content with Captain America’s “evolution and arcs.” While promoting the 2014 film Captain America: The Winter Soldier, he told Screen Rant,

“I feel pretty good. I feel pretty good. You know, it’s – Marvel’s done a great job of giving him, you know, evolution and arcs, so you never feel stagnant, you never feel like the character’s become stale.”

Expressing his satisfaction with Steve Rogers’s character development in the MCU, he said that it has kept the character fresh and interesting. Evans stated that he always believed that the character had more to be explored. The Avengers star also said that he is more comfortable playing the role than ever before, as he is able to bring more to the role as a result.
