Before Liam Hemsworth, Mads Mikkelsen Was Top Contender by Fans to Replace Henry Cavill in Tumultuous Casting Choice for The Witcher

Henry Cavill was the people’s hope of carrying on the legacy of Andrzej Sapkowski’s books with Netflix’s The Witcher. The flame quickly extinguished when Mads Mikkelsen was considered for the replacement of Cavill when he departed from The Witcher franchise.

After the Man of Steel actor’s departure, Mads Mikkelsen was the top contender for the role of Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher. All things considered, the Danish actor did make a pretty good replacement for Cavill but it didn’t come to pass due to Liam Hemsworth.

Mads Mikkelsen Was The Perfect Choice for The Witcher

Being a monster-killing machine with emotions is a tough job for any actor to portray. There were very few actors who could pull off the complexity and the conflict of emotions that Henry Cavill was able to portray as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher.

It naturally came as a surprise for the people when the actor announced his departure from the beloved Netflix series at the end of 2022. Citing the reason to be a creative difference between Cavill and the showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich, the Enola Holmes actor simply got up and left the franchise to never look back.

With a deadline to catch, replacement actors for the lead role of the show were considered and many names were also put forward for the role. According to recent reports, Mads Mikkelsen was the top contender for the role of Geralt of Rivia. In a tweet that showcased a fan-made artwork of Mads Mikkelsen as the Geralt of Rivia, the people showcased their unending support for the Polar actor.

Sadly the whole ordeal and support from the people never came to fruition for reasons unknown. The Hunger Games actor Liam Hemsworth was chosen for the role and replacement of Henry Cavill as the next Geralt of Rivia.

Well, the actor does have a point. In a recent interview, Mikkelsen admitted his dislike for method acting and stated that it was all hogwash. In his interview with GQ, the actor talked about replacing Johnny Depp for the iconic role of Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

“It’s bulls**t. But preparation, you can take into insanity. What if it’s a s**t film — what do you think you achieved? Am I impressed that you didn’t drop character? You should have dropped it from the beginning! How do you prepare for a serial killer? You gonna spend two years checking it out?”

It would have been great for the Danish actor had been indeed finalized for the role of Geralt of Rivia. The people now wait in wonder as to what Liam Hemsworth will be able to do by wielding the silver and steel swords. Although Henry Cavill will portray Geralt of Rivia in the third season of The Witcher, it is sadly his last season on the Netflix show.

The Witcher is available to stream exclusively on Netflix.
