Steven Spielberg Chose Bradley Cooper To Direct Maestro After Watching His First Film
Steven Spielberg was attached to directing a biopic on Leonard Bernstein but later decided to only produce the film. The director was on the hunt for the perfect candidate who would do justice to the biopic as a director. When Spielberg saw A Star is Born which was Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut, he instantly knew that Cooper was the one.
Speaking to Total Film (via Cinemablend), Spielberg’s producing partner Kristie Macosko Krieger revealed that the director was so impressed by Cooper’s skills as a director, that he selected him for Maestro after only watching 20 minutes of A Star is Born. She said,
“Bradley said ‘I’ve made a film called A Star is Born which is currently in post-production’. He invited us to watch it and 20 minutes in, Steven leant over to Bradley and said ‘You are directing this fucking movie’.
He didn’t want to make a standard biopic – he wanted to go deeper and decided that focusing on the marriage [between Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre] would be the best way to tell this story. He was exactly right and the film 100% landed in the right hands.”
The film has received positive reviews from critics and audiences and Cooper’s turn as both director and lead actor has received universal acclaim. The actor and the film have been nominated for Best Actor and several other categories at several upcoming awards events.
