Leonardo DiCaprio Was Considered For Two Superhero Films

To date, we’ve witnessed the portrayal of Peter Parker by at least three different actors in major film adaptations. Approximately ten years prior to Sam Raimi’s successful 2002 Spider-Man debut, James Cameron had ambitious plans to bring the web-slinger to life in a movie produced by Carolco Pictures. Carolco, known for a catalogue of 80s and 90s films including Rambo, Showgirls, Universal Soldier, and Cameron’s own Terminator 2: Judgment Day, faced a well-known financial downfall in 1995. Consequently, Cameron shifted his focus to the production of Titanic instead.

Sony Pictures was enthusiastic about James Cameron’s Spider-Man screenplay and expressed a keen interest in casting his Titanic collaborator in the iconic Spidey suit. Unfortunately, just as Leonardo DiCaprio had declined the role of Robin in Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever, he also passed on the opportunity to portray Peter Parker.

In hindsight, the franchise’s eventual trajectory likely worked out for the best, but it’s undeniably intriguing to contemplate the exciting prospect of Leonardo DiCaprio donning the Spider-Man persona.

A conversation that commenced on friendly terms swiftly transformed into a darker confrontation. In the midst of one of his passionate outbursts, DiCaprio forcefully struck a glass, resulting in his hand being smeared with blood for the duration of the scene.

The injury came as an unanticipated twist in the storyline, as it was not scripted. Leonardo DiCaprio, known for his role in The Great Gatsby, inadvertently hurt himself due to his deep immersion into the scene’s intensity.

Batman Forever can be streamed on HBO Max.
