Despite the rigorous efforts and bombastic marketing, Warner Bros’ Black Adam movie is predicted to lose $50M to $100M in revenue. Its theatrical run is almost coming to an end, and experts consider the franchise a major flop. Fans went to witness the so-called “new era” of the DC universe last October, and even before the premiere, it amassed mixed early reviews.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stars as the titular hero in Black Adam, and despite his efforts at marketing the movie as the long-time coming change in the “hierarchy of power in the DC Universe,” it ended up becoming just another superhero movie.

Black Adam Flops At The Box Office, May Cost Warner Bros $50M-$100M Loss

In a report from Variety, the DC movie is set to lose lots of money by the end of its run. The requirement was to at least hit the $600M mark to break even, but only made a meager total of $387M over the course of seven weeks.

The Rock-starring superhero movie had a budget of $195M, with $100M allocated for marketing. Earning less than $400M over the span of seven weeks, when Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever earned this amount in just three days, is as embarrassing as it can get. Indeed, the box office competition did not help at all.

The Black Adam star’s emphasis on how a new character, almost never heard of by the general public, could change the whole course of the DC universe is downright too self-assured. Given Johnson’s star power and charm in his family-friendly adventure movies, the actor was not able to attract as many audiences as possible. The movie also sits at a 39% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the worst review in the entire DC franchise.

No one could tell what would happen to the sequel given the financial loss that the franchise incurred. The plan, as seen by fans in the movie’s post-credits, is a face-off against Henry Cavill’s Superman. This is hugely a very much-anticipated event and Cavill’s presence might attract the audience and save the franchise from another massive loss.

The Rock has always been a diplomat towards friendly competition. The actor holds no hard feelings with the box office results, writing on his Twitter account: “Always rooting for our business to win. We all benefit overall when box office flourishes.”

Fans will have to keep their eyes peeled for more information regarding Black Adam’s sequel and the rest of the upcoming DC projects.

Black Adam is still playing in theaters worldwide.
