Video games have always drawn inspiration from culture and mythology, and some have become the mascots of the industry. Kratos, from the God of War franchise, is the one who comes to mind first, while other games such as Nioh, Raji, and Darksiders all incorporate mythology to enhance their story. Black Myth: Wukong is making sure its inspirations are apparent in every aspect.

It is now rumored that the game will feature 81 achievements to be unlocked, and this will be a reflection of the 81 difficulties mentioned in Journey to the West. It was previously also claimed that the game would feature 160+ enemies and 80+ bosses, also referencing the important number from the story. If true, it could take players a fair bit of time and multiple playthroughs to get all the trophies and achievements.

Wukong is going to be a Souls-like title, borrowing some elements from FromSoftware, but several elements will allow its uniqueness to shine through. With the possible 80+ achievements and bosses, the game is going to be fairly substantial and offer plenty of challenging moments for the player to enjoy. While we do not yet have a list of all the achievements, they should be a mixture of story-related events and completing specific challenges.

Along with mythology, the game is also drawing inspiration from its competitors in the space. Wukong has reportedly borrowed one mechanic from God of War. The game is also going to feature some beautiful cinematography to help enhance the immersive experience as players explore the world created by Game Science.

In an era of open-world games, getting an AAA experience that is more focused and linear can feel like a breath of fresh air. China’s gaming industry is booming right now, and other titles such as Phantom Blade Zero and Where Winds Meet are going to bring more of the culture’s stories into the spotlight.

PlayStation’s China Hero Project can be counted as a motivator for the many titles we are now seeing. The initiative offers developers in China the ability to build their dream titles with PlayStation’s mentorship, helping them deal with any challenges along the way.

Black Myth: Wukong is going to be the first of many titles released by Chinese developers that are highly awaited by the gaming community. If it delivers on the hype, we may have a new game vying for the title of Game of the Year.
