Once you’ve made your way to the Fright Cliff area after Sandgate Village, make your way to the Rockrest Flat Shrine. Near the shrine is the Boar, our main NPC for this quest. Talk to him to start.

He’s drunk and needs help sobering up. You have to find him a Sobering Stone. Once you’ve got the item, head back to the Boar and give it to him.

He’ll then make his way to the Crouching Tiger Temple. When you find him, he will ask you for Jade Lotus, which you can easily pick from ponds.

After you give it to him, he’ll mention something about a “piece of gold” that an elder brother gave him. He’s talking about the First Prince of Flowing Sand, who you can find in the Valley of Despair. He drops the Arhat Gold Piece once defeated.

Now, go back to where you found the Boar, in Fright Cliff. He won’t be on his rock. Instead, you’ll find him guarding the large gates in the area.

Approach him to start a boss fight, revealing his real name: Yellow-Robed Squire. Show off some of that brutality the game’s been hyped for and defeat him, and the gates will open to a secret area filled with boss fights and treasure.

There are two ways to get the Sobering Stone. One’s shorter but requires you to fight a boss, while the other way is a long trek but lets you get some exploration in.

First, you could make your way over to Windrest Hamlet and snag one from a small alcove just past the Crouching Tiger Temple.

If you’re looking for something a bit easier, start at the beginning of Fright Cliff. Look for the Man-in-Stone NPC near the Squall Hideout, down at the bottom of the ravine.

He has a quest for you, which involves taking down the Mother of Stone nearby. After defeating her, you’ll receive the Essence of Stone.

Challenge the Man-in-Stone to a fight by giving him a good whack, defeat him, and then chat with him afterward. Reset the area by resting at a Shrine, and voila! You’ll be able to purchase a Sobering Stone from him.
