One of the primary aspects of succeeding in Black Myth Wukong is the upgrading of armor. Armors are craftable in the game from the get-go, and as you progress, you’ll need better gear to deal with foes. However, upgrading armor requires players to go to a special location that many might be unfamiliar with, especially new players.

The Painted Realm is a place in the game where you’ll get to meet other NPCs and also upgrade armor sets. That said, the area isn’t available from the start, as you need to complete a specific quest to unlock it.

In the early stages of Black Myth Wukong, you’ll get to craft armor, but upgrade features are only unlocked in Chapter 3. Once you complete Chapter 2, interact with an NPC called Xu Dog, who can be found in a cave near the Village Entrance Keeper’s Shrine in Sandgate Village.

If you are wondering about the precise location of the character, get on the wooden bridge near the entrance and then jump to the right into the ravine. Enter the cave and look for fox Yaoguai symbols; there, you’ll find Xu Dog.

The NPC will ask you to retrieve one of his formulas from a frog that ate it. He will point towards a pond, where you’ll see Lang-Li-Guhh-Baw, who is an optional boss that you can fight. However, if you want to unlock the Painted Realm, you need to fight the boss.

Defeat the frog boss and talk with Xu Dog again. This will cause him to leave the scene, and he will now reside at the Cellar Checkpoint in the Crouching Tiger Temple. Continue with the Chapter 3 quest and defeat the boss, Kang-Jin Star.

Towards the end of the quest, you will jump off a giant turtle’s head and encounter Chen Loong, who is another optional boss. Defeating the boss will make him apologize to you and ask for a special pill. To get the pill, simply interact with Xu Dog in the location mentioned earlier. Finally, give the pill to Chen Loong, and he will teleport you to the Painted Realm.

Once you are in the Painted Realm, you’ll see a bunch of NPCs who are the major merchants in the game. Hence, if you are looking for specific items in Game Science’s Black Myth Wukong, head over to the Painted Realm.

In the realm, you’ll meet Yin Tiger, who will be your go-to merchant for upgrading armor. You can also battle the NPC, and if you manage to defeat the merchant, you’ll be able to transform into his battle form in your own fights. The form grants you a big sword and the ability to tank damage, which can be very useful.

Black Myth Wukong guide can be complicated due to the fact it is an adaptation of a classical Chinese novel Journey to the West with many intricate layers. However, following the general directions in the game will allow you to progress without much hindrance.
