In the past, the studio has worked on a variety of horror-survival games like Layers of Fear and The Medium and currently developing the upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake. The studio’s knack for insightful storytelling and gripping narratives can set a strong foundation for a game that’s set in The Walking Dead universe.

A Collaboration with Skybound Entertainment is a Clear Hint at Another Game Based on The Walking Dead

Codename R is hopefully a game set in The Walking Dead universe, considering Skybound Entertainment’s involvement.

In a recent press release, the Polish studio made it official. There’s an upcoming project in the works that’s yet another horror game. This time, the collaboration with Skybound Entertainment has led many to believe that it’s no other than the well-known IP, The Walking Dead

On the website, they’ve mentioned the newfound collaboration with Skybound Entertainment and how the project is looking at the moment. Translated from Polish to English, here’s what it reads:

This project is the next step in the 2nd party strategy, under which we cooperate with external partners providing our horror know-how. These are not titles that are intended to give us only financial profit, but are further steps in achieving our strategy by the end of 2027.

This was the statement made by Bloober Team’s president, Piotr Babieno. It seems that the title will play a major role in shaping the studio’s vision with how they build and design games. Moreover, the kind of narratives and IPs we can expect from the team.

What can we expect from Team Bloober’s take on The Walking Dead?

Based on the press release, it seems that devs have geared up to release multiple games in the coming years.

Even before 2024, we have seen an era that has seen its fair share of The Walking Dead material. We’ve had a ton of comic books, a TV Show (including spin-offs), and video games that have either been one of the best, or desperate attempts at recreating the show’s magic.

One of the few developers who got the formula right is Telltale Games, which managed to build a series of games that were true to The Walking Dead’s horrifying universe where humans and monsters cross each other’s paths every day.

Regardless of how overdone this formula may be, the fact that Bloober Team is working on an IP like this may just be a sigh of relief for fans of the horror genre. The team is known for crafting interesting stories set in mystical and supernatural worlds, with the right amount of player involvement, even when a game may feel more like an interactive novel rather than a horror-survival one.

Mechanics in a horror survival game aren’t new to players, especially those who have been long-time fans of the franchise. But what separates The Walking Dead’s universe from other post-apocalyptic scenarios are the multitude of layers found in humanity’s battle against politics, religion, and societal issues that continue to exist in a broken world.

That, mixed with the ongoing terror of zombies, makes for the perfect landscape for engaging writing and storytelling.

At the TV show front, the upcoming The Ones Who Live will premiere on 25th February, and acts as a sequel spin-off to the popular series. It will follow the story of Rick and Michonne following the events of The Walking Dead.

The timing of this can work in favor of the devs and Skybound Entertainment since fans will be adequately hyped for the series to take on newer horizons and perhaps even bring old fans back into the mix.

As for newcomers, a AAA game with The Walking Dead as its backdrop can do a lot for the horror-survival franchise. Until we hear more from the developers, it’s best to wait and watch as to how the project unfolds.
