Sacha Baron Cohen’s 2006 mockumentary black comedy movie Borat left quite an impression on movie-goers of the time. Not only is its impact felt even today, but the English actor’s portrayal of the satirical, outrageous protagonist has created ripples in a genre-defining attempt. There have been discussions and debates surrounding the controversial depiction. While some have thoroughly enjoyed it, others couldn’t digest it.

One particular source of contention stemmed from the film’s anti-Semitic elements, witnessed predominantly through the leading role. While Baron Cohen once addressed that the character is a tool to expose prejudices felt or tolerated by others, many may have misinterpreted the movie to fit their bigotry. Regardless of the implications of the character, the comedian revealed how his portrayal in Borat increased his appeal in Hollywood and led to him being approached for a particular kind of role.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s Anti-Semitic Character Led To Him Getting More Jewish Roles

Appearing on the 2019 Comedy Actors Roundtable, alongside other remarkable talents such as Jim Carrey, Ted Danson, Henry Winkler, and others, Sacha Baron Cohen revealed an intriguing aspect of his standing in Hollywood after the release of Borat. Ironically, the problematic aspects of the comedian’s on-screen depiction, mainly the anti-Semitism, resulted in him getting more roles, specifically Jewish characters. The English actor, who was born into a Jewish family, has faced condemnation for Borat‘s open anti-Semitism.

Even if the renowned comedian previously explained why such components were included in the outlandish mockumentary, it hasn’t been enough to persuade some viewers to endorse the project or stop its renunciation. Baron Cohen referenced this controversial aspect in the roundtable discussion. The distinguished guests were questioned on the roles they are frequently preferred for or pigeonholed into—something that makes them go, “Ugh, not this again.”

In his answer, Sacha Baron Cohen first stated the following:

“I think I went through a period of getting multi-character ideas. There would be films where, ‘Hey, Sacha. Here is your idea in which you’re gonna play ten characters!’ I get ten characters!”

He then described the second phase in his life where he would get approached for more Jewish roles despite playing an openly anti-Semitic character in Borat:

“I think after Borat—because Borat was the first openly anti-Semitic character—I suddenly started getting Jewish characters. As if somehow I was the only Jew in Hollywood. So, there was a lot of, ‘Will you play this Jewish character or this Jewish character?’ I think somehow Borat being anti-Semitic made me appear that I’d be very good at [playing] a Jewish character.”

It was quite an ironic twist of events in his career. The implications of Hollywood’s pigeonholing tactics seem rather outrageous. Baron Cohen once went into further detail about the character that had drawn criticism and praise simultaneously in a Rolling Stone interview. He examined the anti-Semitic components and outlined the reasons for their inclusion.

How Borat Functions As A “Tool”

Talking to Rolling Stone in 2006, Baron Cohen explained how Borat, as a character, works towards reflecting the prejudices that exist in the world. While his actions in the film serve as an over-the-top parody, a caricature of such uncomfortable societal truths, the people he encounters in America and their ignorance are direct products of such a reality. He said the following in his statement:

“I think part of the movie shows the absurdity of holding any form of racial prejudice, whether it’s hatred of African-Americans or of Jews […] Borat essentially works as a tool. By himself being anti-Semitic, he lets people lower their guard and expose their own prejudice, whether it’s anti-Semitism or an acceptance of anti-Semitism.”

While this justification won’t stop the debates around the film, it does explain many of the narrative elements and offensive punchlines in the mockumentary. However, as many critics have noted, some audiences may not recognize the project’s satirical component. They may fail to understand its reflection of society. Instead, they may find it to be encouraging of their bigotry. It all boils down to media literacy skills.
