Martin Scorsese, who has now become the most-nominated living movie director with his nod for Killers of the Flower Moon, and Nolan, who has earned his second Best Director nomination for Oppenheimer after Dunkirk have picked another fellow Oscar Nominee movie as their recent favorite. 

Christopher Nolan And Martin Scorsese Both Liked Past Lives 

In a recent interview with TIME, Christopher Nolan praised two smaller indie films. And one of them is Celine Song’s 2023 intimate drama, Past Lives which recently received Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. The director called the film “subtle in a beautiful sort of way.

However, this doesn’t mean Nolan is going to make similar kinds of movies, though. “I’m drawn to working at a large scale because I know how fragile the opportunity to marshal those resources is,” Nolan commented.

And, Martin Scorsese also poured huge praise for the movie. Directed and written by Celine Song in her feature directorial debut, Past Lives garnered critical acclaim. And one of the people who loved the film was Scorsese. During an interview with Screen Rant on the 76th Director Guild of America Awards red carpet, Song shared that Scorsese loved the film.

Marty Scorsese loves the film, he told me. That’s so cool, I was freaking out. He said he loves the movie, so yeah, that’s all. I can tell you more about it, but I feel like it should be a bit of a secret private thing that I want to have, as well.

Scorsese is not just a great filmmaker, he is also a great cinephile. And his praise definitely means a lot for this indie production.

Starring Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and John Magaro, the movie follows two childhood soulmates – Nora and Hae Sung over the course of 20 years. It is an understated and emotionally resonant film about the power of love, loss, and second chances.

Past Lives has a 96% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics praised Song’s screenplay and direction. It has also been named one of the top ten movies of 2023 by the National Board of Review. It grossed $23 million worldwide, according to The Numbers

The film though got nominations in the Best Picture category, its chance of winning this one seems less due to Oppenheimer, But it could take home the Best Original Screenplay award, as Celine Song’s writing received huge praise from critics.
