Blue Beetle is one of the last projects to be brought to realization before James Gunn and Peter Saffran start their vision for the franchise. The DC Universe has been suffering for the past few years since the brand hasn’t put out a single hit film. Extremely disillusioned, many fans have even given up hope that their cherished franchise will emerge from the ruins.

The movie has already been released at the theatres worldwide and things are looking good for the movie. Unlike the previous DCU movies, Blue Beetle had a solid start at the box office and is aiming to break the downward curse the franchise was going through. Many fans and critics have also come forward to support this claim.

Blue Beetle Will Most Likely Break the DCU Curse

A Mexican youngster who comes into contact with an extraterrestrial entity and gains strength from it, giving him abilities like improved reflexes and superior armor, is the base of Blue Beetle. The unique function of a symbiote, guarding itself by bestowing divine abilities on its host has already been seen in the cinema. However, the movie has received positive reviews from many fans and reviewers.

The film is currently playing in theatres and Jaime Reyes, Xolo Maridueña, the lead cast of the movie has received high acclaim for his star performance. Critics have given the movie favorable reviews, praising Maridueña’s acting and Angel Manuel Soto’s directing. Additionally, it is already a hit at the box office, earning tens of millions globally.

Blue Beetle is not a total box office success yet. Its meager $25.4 million opening weekend is the second-lowest for a live-action DC movie in more than ten years. Though it is still early in the film’s theatrical run, both reviewers and viewers have given it favorable reviews. As it has the potential to be a breakout smash for the DCEU, it is still feasible that the film may find an audience and be a commercial success. As such, it is important to keep a watch on it.

The WGA strike had an impact on the Blue Beetle film. Just a few weeks before the movie’s debut, on August 15, 2023, the strike officially started. The movie’s advertising strategy suffered as a result. The studio was unable to issue trailers or other promotional materials, and the actors and crew were unable to take part in interviews or promotional events. Despite these obstacles, the movie is doing well in cinemas.

DCU Suffers Another Low Grosser: Shazam! Fury of the Gods

The DC Universe has suffered another low-grosser with the release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The sequel had an opening that is lower than the first Shazam! movie and has also been met with mixed reviews from critics. The film debuted on a busy weekend that also saw the release of high-profile productions including Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Avatar: The Way of Water.

Additionally, Shazam 2‘s marketing effort was not as effective as the previous film’s, and some fans could have been turned off by the film’s more somber tone. The poor performance of Shazam! Fury of the Gods is yet another setback for the franchise, which has recently had trouble establishing itself. There have been a few triumphs, but in recent years the number of failures has outweighed the wins.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is regarded as a commercial flop. The movie made $133.8M worldwide, far less if compared to its $125 million production budget. It will be interesting to watch if the DCU can change course. Even though the studio has a number of forthcoming films in production, it will need to produce some blockbusters if it hopes to win back fans’ confidence.
