Bryan Cranston is an actor known for portraying the role of Walter White in AMC’s iconic drama series Breaking Bad. With the role, Cranston found worldwide fame with his role and a chance to work with other directors on different projects.
Talking about his 2011 movie titled Detachment, Cranston stated that he did not get along with director Tony Kaye. Kaye, known for directing the iconic 1998 movie American History X also had similar views about Bryan Cranston and the rest of the cast.
Bryan Cranston Talks About Working With Tony Kaye
Fans have often heard celebrities complaining about working with Tony Kaye and how difficult of a director he is. Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston was no exception since he narrated the time he worked with Kaye on the sets of his 2011 movie Detachment.
In 2016, the actor sat down for an interview with Get a Job (via Far Out Magazine), Bryan Cranston seemed disgusted that the interviewer had seen his film and even questioned whether they really liked it or not. Stating that the beautiful script was not adapted on the big screen properly, the Malcolm in the Middle actor went on to insult Tony Kaye and how he would not work again with the director.
“I’m surprised to hear that [you liked the film] actually. Because, I felt that Carl Lund, the writer of Detachment, wrote a really beautiful, haunting script. And I didn’t feel that it was honoured.”
He further continued,
“I don’t believe that I’ll be working with him [Tony Kaye] again. I didn’t not get along with him on a personal level, but I just honour the writing. I really think that writing is the most important element there is. It is the springboard. It is where everything starts. And if you don’t honour that, which I didn’t feel it was, then where are you?”
Cranston isn’t the only actor who has problems with Kaye since back in 1998, the up-and-coming actor Edward Norton had a feud with the director which led Tony Kaye from retracting his name from American History X.
Edward Norton Had A Public Feud With Tony Kaye
Back when Kaye was directing his first major motion picture titled American History X, Edward Norton was cast in the lead role. After the movie was completed, the studio demanded the movie be cut as per their wishes. As reported by The Telegraph, Kaye wasn’t all too happy about this request.
“I’m fully aware that I’m a first-time director, but I need the same autonomy and respect that Stanley Kubrick gets,”
Edward Norton helped the director cut down some scenes and when Kaye failed to show up with another cut, the Primal Fear star stepped in and showcased a movie filled with his ideas that the studio loved. This led to a feud between Norton and Kaye and the director wanted to disassociate himself from the movie. Making fun of the movie with different names, Tony Kaye even sued the studio for $200 million, but nothing worked.
In the end, American History X received a rating of 8.5/10 on IMDB and 86% on Rotten Tomatoes and even got Edward Norton an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role. The movie is currently available to stream on Paramount+ in the U.S.
