Once a Hollywood heartthrob that was boycotted by the very same people, Brendan Fraser has had quite a few ups and downs in his life. From being the main focus after the success of The Mummy in 1999 to being allegedly sexually assaulted and discarded by Hollywood, he has seen it all. And now the actor has made a comeback to the same industry.
With Fraser’s The Whale getting international recognition and worldwide love, the actor opened up about his personal life. Talking about the difficult times, the George of the Jungle actor blamed himself when it was diagnosed that his son was in fact, autistic.
Brendan Fraser Blames Himself For His Son’s Autism
Following the success of The Whale and Brendan Fraser’s Hollywood comeback, the actor got more comfortable with the people. Being a beloved actor, people had rooted for Fraser during his time off the screens and were there to support him when he made his comeback.
In an interview on The Howard Stern Show, Brendan Fraser got candid about his personal life. Talking about the dark times, Fraser revealed that he took the blame when his son was diagnosed with autism. The Bedazzled actor had no idea what to do or how to cure his son.
“It felt like I was hit with a baseball bat in the back of the head. The first reaction that I had was, ‘I want to know how to fix this. What’s the cure? What does this mean?’ This isn’t the way it’s supposed to turn out. You blame yourself and you think, ‘My genealogy’ or ‘I smoked weed in college’.”
He further stated that although his divorce from ex-wife Afton Smith was a pretty big deal, he did not let it get in the way of his son’s therapy or emotional support.
“I paid more attention to my professional life than my personal one. But with Griffin, all bets are off. Who cares what our problems are with each other? That doesn’t matter.”
The actor, however, did say that seeing the condition of his son made him a better actor for The Whale since his son had no idea about cynicism and that made him as happy as a person can be.
Brendan Fraser Has No Interest In The Golden Globe Awards
After allegations of Philip Berk groping Branden Fraser made worldwide news, Fraser was seen as the victim of a sexual assault. With The Whale being one of Fraser’s best acting performances to date, the actor was naturally nominated for the Best Actor Award at the 2023 Golden Globes.
Calling the Golden Globes nothing but a hood ornament for the actors to adorn their homes with, here’s what Brendan Fraser said on The Howard Stern Show.
“We all are still awaiting that, to tell you the truth…What does matter is that it would mean nothing to me? I don’t want it. I didn’t ask to be considered even, that was presumed. They needed me, I didn’t need them. Because it wouldn’t be meaningful to me. Where am I gonna put that hood ornament? What would I do with that?”
With a strong 8/10 rating on IMDB, The Whale, directed by Darren Aronofsky, and distributed by A24, has been hailed as one of the best movies of 2022.
