Brie Larson has been a prominent figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since she debuted as Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, in the 2019 standalone film. However, the actress recently clarified that her inspiration to play the iconic superheroine didn’t solely stem from Carol Danvers.
Instead, Brie Larson revealed that she was largely drawn to the role due to another character – Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel. As Larson’s character prepares to appear in the upcoming film The Marvels alongside newcomer Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan, it’s interesting to look back at how Larson’s initial interest in the role was sparked by a character who wouldn’t make her on-screen debut until years later.
Why Brie Larson Wanted To Play Captain Marvel
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Brie Larson explained that her decision to play Captain Marvel was influenced by the character of Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel.
“A huge part of why I wanted to play Captain Marvel was because of Ms. Marvel and what that meant. To see that character realized by such a brilliant human with so much potential is just a really exciting thing.”

Despite its low viewership numbers, Ms. Marvel has been a critical success. The show currently holds a 98% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the highest-reviewed MCU adaptation of Phase 4’s lineup.
