Brie Larson has been known to the world as Captain Marvel in the MCU. Although it was her iconic role, the actress had already won her Oscar for Best Actress back in 2015. Another star that was competing against Larson was Tomb Raider alum Alicia Vikander.

Starring in the role of Gerda Wegener in the 2015 movie titled The Danish Girl, Vikander was nominated for the category of Best Actress in a Supporting Role. The harrowing point is that her screentime was enough to qualify for the Best Actress category but the distributors were afraid of competing against Brie Larson!

When Alicia Vikander Was Not Allowed To Compete With Brie Larson

During the Oscars 2016, Brie Larson won an Oscar for the category for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Ma in the 2015 movie Room. During the same year, Alicia Vikander starred in the Eddie Redmayne movie The Danish Girl.

According to film trivia, Alicia Vikander had a screen time of 59 minutes and 37 seconds, which was almost 49.9% of the runtime of The Danish Girl. This screen time was enough to qualify Vikander for the category of Best Actress instead of Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars. The harrowing thing is that distributor Focus Feature knew about this rule.

The subsidiary company of Universal Studios decided to campaign for Alicia Vikander to get nominated in the category of Best Supporting Actress only. Stating that they had more chances of winning in the Supporting Actress category rather than the Best Actress category, the distributors did not allow Vikander to compete against Brie Larson.

This directly seemed to imply that the studio already admitted defeat against Brie Larson for her iconic portrayal in Room. Brie Larson indeed won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role and Alicia Vikander refused to comment on the competition.

MCU actor Samuel Jackson recently sat down for an interview with Rolling Stone regarding the latest Marvel series Secret Invasion. When talk of his co-star Brie Larson came, the actor was quite adamant on his words that people shouldn’t mess around with Larson.

“Brie’s a stronger person than people give her credit for. She’s not going to let any of that stuff destroy her…These incel dudes who hate strong women, of the fact that she’s a feminist who has an opinion and expressed it? Everybody wants people to be who they want them to be. She is who she is, and she’s genuinely that.”

The actress has received quite some online trolling and hatred for her role as Captain Marvel in the MCU but that does not deter her from giving her some iconic performances. With an Oscar to her name, Room, starring Brie Larson is available to stream on Max.
