There are a lot of new characters on the horizon for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For a franchise long centered around the Big Three of the genius billionaire Iron Man, super-soldier Captain America, and the Asgardian god of thunder Thor, the MCU now finds itself introducing new superheroes every few months. There are new concepts of the multiverse, the quantum realm, and time travel that fans must contend with while keeping up with the new faces coming up.

Take Kamala Khan, for example. The Carol-Danvers-fangirl had all her wildest dreams come true when she discovered an ancient bracelet that helped her harness supernatural powers and become the young superhero, Miss Marvel. Her TV series, Miss Marvel, didn’t do very well, but Khan finds herself starring alongside her inspiration Danvers and Danvers’ friend Monica Rambeau in Marvel’s The Marvels. Only recently did Marvel announce that the release date for the movie will be pushed back significantly from July 28th, 2023 to November 10th, 2023. This comes after the movie was originally slated to release on November 11th, 2022.

Marvel has messed up with Ant-Man 3 recently

After Chadwick Boseman’s unfortunate demise, the world was bereft of a good man and a great actor, and the MCU lost an enigmatic character in King T’Challa of Wakanda, the bearer of the Black Panther mantle. In the second movie of the Black Panther franchise, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), fans witnessed in awe as Shuri, T’Challa’s brainy sister, rose up to not only assume the mantle of the Black Panther and become Wakanda’s new guardian but also help deflect the threat of Namor from her people.

The success of Black Panther 2 must be attributed to not only great writing and execution on-screen, but also to the visual effects artists, who churned out amazing CGI scenes throughout the movie, the likes of which the MCU is increasingly falling back upon in recent times. It did, mean, however, that the resources that were needed for the making of another movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) were directed towards the making of Black Panther 2.

Quantumania fell short of expectations on the VFX front. In fact, Marvel’s scheduling was so off-track that it appears as if Paul Rudd, who plays the role of Scott Lang (aka Ant-Man), had to come in for shooting a few scenes a month out from the release date. The rescheduling of The Marvels owing to “post-production issues” might indicate a step in the right direction for the franchise, to allow for more time that goes into the making of the title.

Each of the Marvels in The Marvels has had previous runs in the MCU

The Marvels will feature the three ‘Marvels’ known in the MCU – discounting the Captain Marvel from Earth-838 featuring in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) – Kamala Khan’s Miss Marvel, Monica Rambeau’s Photon, and Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel. All three of them are well-acquainted to fans of the MCU, and while Danvers’ character, played by Brie Larson, is the tearaway popular superhero among the three, how the other two shape up alongside her will keep fans guessing.

Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the movie. He draws sharp parallels between fangirl Khan and the then-new recruit Spider-Man (played by Tom Holland) in Captain America: Civil War (2016), both of whom were starry-eyed around their idols. Feige also says seeing the three Marvels together on screen is reminiscent of how the six original Avengers showed up together in a single shot for the first time in The Avengers (2012), as they assessed the alien armies cascading down upon New York, led by the god of mischief, Loki.

“…there’s something immensely powerful about seeing Monica and Kamala and Carol together in a frame. To me, it’s only akin to the first Avengers movie and seeing the six of them together in a frame. It’s chill-inducing …the great thing about Kamala in her show, and now in this movie, is that she’s not unlike Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in Civil War. She can’t believe she’s with these other heroes, and can’t believe that she finds herself in these places. And that’s fun because we want to be that. I want to be that,” Feige said.

Kamala Khan is played by Iman Vellani, and Monica Rambeau is played by Teyonah Parris.

Monica Rambeau is likely to assume the role of the superhero Photon, after her mother, the late Maria Rambeau. The younger Rambeau was a friend to Danvers from before her Captain Marvel days, and the former had actually helped the residents of the town of Westview from a Scarlet Witch hex in the TV series WandaVision (2021). Danvers has had her own movie, Captain Marvel (2019), and is well-remembered for tearing up Thanos’ mothership single-handedly, while also holding her own against the Mad Titan in Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Miss Marvel is currently available on Disney+. The Marvels will be hitting theatres on 10th November, 2023.
