No matter what Homelander seems to do in The Boys, we cannot help but be in awe of him and Antony Starr is a big reason why. Ever since viewers first saw him in the get-up for season one’s The Name of the Game, they knew that both the actor and his character were going to be a force to reckon with, and let’s just say that we are four seasons in and the man has not disappointed.

We love Homelander’s blue and red suit, which is eerily similar to that of Superman’s except that you wouldn’t be thanking God when you see this suit flying in to “save” you, you’d be praying to him. While Antony Starr looks absolutely incredible in the suit, fans are missing one iconic part of the outfit in season 4 – the red flap on his chest.

In season one of The Boys, we got to take a look at the small red flap on Homelander’s suit which would sometimes be buttoned up and sometimes left open, giving Antony Starr’s character a more chilled-out look.

While we love both versions of the suit, it looks like many fans want the costume department of the Prime original to bring the flap back.

Back in 2020, Starr took to Instagram to share a bunch of photos from his first costume fitting for Homelander in a now-deleted post. In the photos that you can see below, Starr sports the suit while rocking his natural hair color.

Just found these early 2018 shots of the suit, first time trying it on complete. It took six months (approx) to get to this stage. Amazing process to watch the team build it. To think how far we’ve come… four suits in, more to come!

In one of the photos, you can see the red flap in all its glory. If you notice closely, the flap looked just a little bit different in the photo as compared to the one that made it to season 1.

And while it may not be a big deal for some, there are many fans out there who simply want Eric Kripke and the team to bring the good old flap back. Take a look at what fans are saying about it:

Well, with just one episode left before season four comes to an end, perhaps there might be a surprise waiting for the flap-loving fans of the show. If not, fans will just have to wait for the fifth and final season of The Boys.

Why Did Antony Starr’s Costume Have A Flap?

Since the flap is buttoned up most of the time, you might be wondering why it was created in the first place. Well, it’s all about the right timing. The costume designer for The Boys, Laura Jean Shannon, once sat down for an interview with CBR where she revealed the reason behind Homelander’s flap.

When asked how she felt about the characters being in their super suits most of the time, especially at Vought Tower, Shannon stated,

I actually loved that part of it. I was actually really excited to have characters who are straight-up superheroes 24-7. I love that my suits are suits.

Since the supes are constantly in their suits, Shannon revealed that the flap was a little fun idea to represent Homelander’s moods. When the flap was zipped up, the supe’s strictly in the mood for business but when he leaves it open, he’s simply being casual.

With Homelander, one of the ways that we dealt with it – and you really only see it a little bit in a few episodes, and in fact, I literally made a note, like ‘note to self, talk to the team to make sure we see more of this in the right scenes’ – is I actually created a little flap [on his chest] for him.

So the joke is, he’s fully in his super suit, but when he’s being casual, he can open the flap and then have the flap down, and there’s this little panel of red fabric with custom metalicized star print on it. And it’s just such a moment, like that’s Homelander relaxing is just dropping his flap.

The Boys does not give Homelander much time to sit back, relax, and enjoy a cold glass of milk. Which could explain why the flap hasn’t been released recently. Hopefully soon, though!
