Jim Gordon is a significant character in the Batman movies, a character that has been portrayed by many actors in varying mediums, such as films, animations, series, and video games. Commissioner Gordon works closely with Batman to help solve crimes committed by supervillains in Gotham City.

J.K. Simmons portrayed the police officer in DCEU’s Justice League (2017). Since James Gunn has yet to give details about his plans for any upcoming Batman movies under his DC Universe legacy, there is scarce knowledge as to who will portray Gordon in the future.

Meanwhile, Cranston absolutely looks incredible in the artwork, which makes a compelling case that Gunn should consider him for the role once more. His outstanding work on Breaking Bad, as well as his experience voicing the animated version, is more than enough reason for the actor to land the job.

Bryan Cranston Wants To Play Jim Gordon Again

Bryan Cranston as Jim Gordon in Batman: Year One

In an interview with MTV News, Bryan Cranston talked about his time working on Batman: Year One. He admitted not being a fan of animated films, but he loves good storytelling. Initially, he turned down the offer, but after a couple of agents convinced him to read the script, he was surprised at how good it was. Cranston confessed:

I turned down the offer because I wasn’t aware of the depth of where it was going. I didn’t read [the script], and I didn’t think it was something I’d want to do at the time… So I read it, and I called them back and said, ‘You’re right. It’s not anything like that. It’s actually interesting and thoughtful and dark and adult. Let’s do it.’ That’s how it came about!

Even though he was a bit apprehensive about taking on the job, Cranston came to love the character. When asked if he would like to return to the role, the actor responded:

I actually do. There hasn’t been any conversation about extending it beyond what we’ve done, but I would be very interested in seeing if this is possible.”

Lastly, Cranston believes there are more narratives that could be explored and fleshed out apart from what has been shown on the screen. He pointed out that filmmakers could still find a new perspective on the characters and dissect their motives, agenda, or even morals. He further added:

I look at this project, and I go, there are more stories that could be mined from here… But what’s refreshing about this is there’s a different perspective, and I think it’s the correct one. Whether I was playing Jim Gordon or not, I think it was the correct one, because you have Batman as an extreme, and it’s almost more interesting to take a step back and take a look at Batman from a more objective standpoint than being in his skin, the subjectivity of it.”

Cranston’s collected demeanor as Commission Gordon would perfectly fit either in a solo live-action Batman movie or a Justice League team-up film, though these plans are yet to be announced.
