Following the unfortunate passing of the legendary mangaka, the Dragon Ball franchise found itself at a standstill. With many projects being in the works and others already ongoing, priorities were shifted so as to ensure that Toriyama’s legacy wasn’t hurt in the process of simply completing these already announced projects. From Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero to DAIMA, there is a lot that fans can look forward to.

The Secret of Majin Buu

It has been theorized for quite a while now that Majin Buu’s origins may stretch from even before Bibidi found a way to wake him up. Many assumed that it was he who created Buu and that he wasn’t a preexisting figure in the Dragon Ball world. This brought about the idea that before Whis turned Beerus into the God of Destruction, there resided another.

His cycle of hibernation and destruction were just patterns observed by Bibidi who then used them against him not only to awaken him from his slumber but also to seal him away completely. This would suggest that Majin Buu wasn’t just a character who strolled the oldest pages of Dragon Ball’s history but also that he could have been the original God of Destruction.

While there wasn’t much to back the theory itself, there was one obstruction; the belief that Bibidi was responsible for creating Majin Buu. However, it was Akira Toriyama himself who debunked that thought.

Even Akira Toriyama Didn’t Know Buu’s Past

During an interview with Saikyou Jump (via Kanzenshuu), Akira Toriyama addressed the belief that Bibidi had a hand in creating Majin Buu. There were many who believed it to be true but the mangaka never made the character with such an intention. In fact, even he couldn’t pinpoint just how long he had been part of the world.

Though in the manga Kaiōshin said that Bibidi made him, the truth is that one called Buu was not actually created by Bibidi, but has existed since time immemorial. He cycled between rampages and long hibernation. During numerous iterations of this cycle, he absorbed the evil elements of mankind, becoming steadily more violent. Bibidi merely knew the means of calling Boo from out of his long slumber. Since the current Buu is a slightly different life-form due to the changes brought about when the evil Buu was expelled, it’s not known whether he’ll still go into long hibernation.

Toriyama stated that Buu had been a character who’s existence dated back to such a time that perhaps even the history books wouldn’t have known. Bibidi simply knew a way to wake him up. This definitely opened a door to the aforementioned theory, suggesting that not only does Buu have an unexposed past but also that he may have been the original God of Destruction.

If Toyotaru takes things in a similar direction, Dragon Ball Super could create an entirely new tail for Buu that would add more to his character. It could be a huge game changer for the series, especially seeing how Beerus is one of the central characters as well.
