Call of Duty has remained one of the largest gaming franchises in existence for nearly twenty years now, but its fans are not always happy by any stretch. In particular,  the inclusion of futuristic technology and futuristic settings has been a hot-button topic for years within the community. While some fans prefer the old-school past-war settings such as World War II, Vietnam, and more, some fans prefer the more contemporary approach in Modern Warfare. Still, yet, some fans prefer the future settings of other installments.

If you’re looking for a definitive decision on this stance, you’ll find the fountain of youth sooner. With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III about to release, the debate over the inclusion of future technology has begun to rage again, specifically regarding the usage of jet packs in the games. Some fans feel as though the franchise peaked with more futuristic games such as Black Ops II while others believe the golden years were the original Modern Warfare games in the Xbox 360 era.

Do Jet Packs Belong in Call of Duty?

A recent thread on Twitter kicked off by Modern Warzone posited the question to Call of Duty fans everywhere, and the responses came to no semblance of a unified response. One user, in particular, replied that they should never return and that people looking for such a feature should instead look to the popular Halo franchise instead.

It is worth noting, however, that within the Halo franchise, jet packs only appeared in 2010’s Halo: Reach and 2012’s Halo 4, and in both cases as optional equipment rather than a permanent movement fixture, so very few people familiar with the franchise would immediately think of Halo when they think of FPS games with jet packs. Separately, popular Halo YouTuber HiddenXperia replied saying that each Call of Duty studio should tackle a different style of play.

Scrolling through the thread, it seems nearly every other comment is an adamant “yes” or “no,” showing the difficult decisions to be faced by Call of Duty developers working on future installments in the franchise, with it being clear that no matter what route they go down, there will be a deep divide within the fanbase waiting at the end of the path.

Where do you stand on the Call of Duty jetpack debate? Do you believe they should return to the games once again, or do you feel the franchise is better off in a modern-day setting rather than shooting for the stars in a futuristic world? Let us know in the comments and on our social media feeds!
