Call of Duty is a franchise with recent titles that have been accused of offering the same thing over and over again. Players have voiced this and have supported their opinions with evidence showcasing reused resources. The multiplayer-heavy approach that has been taken by almost all of the series’ recent titles has also made the game feel redundant.
Call of Duty Future Warfare was a title that was supposed to be released in 2013, instead of Ghosts. The game was meant to be developed by Neversoft, the developer widely known for Guitar Hero. The project was dubbed ‘NX1’, and gameplay footage was leaked recently on Twitter. It showed many promising elements, including multiplayer maps and gameplay; some features, like maps, look like very similar to what gamers received with MW3.

The original Modern Warfare 3 was a title loved by most Call of Duty fans, as players appreciated the game’s multiplayer and single-player modes. The game was released in 2011, and even if one were to look at its footage in 2024, it doesn’t look as dated as many of the other games released close to it.
The title was succeeded by Call of Duty Black Ops 2 and then Ghosts. Recently, news broke that a game in development by Neversoft named Future Warfare was canceled. The title’s gameplay was leaked recently on Twitter and showed that the team at Neversoft had designed single-player missions, and even had a multiplayer mode in mind with many of the maps figured out.
While some maps are exciting, look unique, and sound like they would be set in an environment not explored in any other title in the series, some have been reused from MW3 (2011). Modern Warfare 3 fans will quickly recognize familiar maps like Terminal and Outpost. Other maps seem to have been repurposed, remastered and reused for the title.
This approach of remastering and reusing maps was also seen in Modern Warfare 3 (2023) when it featured various maps from previous installments that were remastered.
There was also a gameplay leak of the title released on Twitter. The leak shows various missions that were most likely meant to be for the game’s single-player campaign.
After that, the leak shows the player beginning a mission titled “Moonbase Assault”. The mission starts and feels very much like a 2010s COD title. It has the mission briefing appearing in the bottom right of the screen. It even has a real-time rendered cutscene like many of the campaign missions in previous titles from the series.
As the name suggests, it shows the player, Walker, fighting against enemies while on the moon using advanced weaponry that can operate on the moon’s gravity. After being knocked down, Walker is rescued by a fellow soldier named Miller. Soon, a lot of his fellow teammates are killed in the line of duty.
It is interesting to wonder how the game would have shaped up if Activision hadn’t cancelled it and it has seen the light of day. Also, not just from its title, but many of its elements including the futuristic setting and high-tech weaponry that look straight out of a science fiction movie, resemble Advanced Warfare.
It is always fascinating to understand how video games, which are indubitably one of the most interactive and engaging forms of media and art, are made.

Also, the game looked very well ahead of the other alpha builds that have surfaced of other titles due to leaks. The footage embedded above almost feels like a complete game and feels nearly complete. If the dev mode overlays and statistic counters were absent, it would not even feel like a dev build, but more like a closed alpha.
