While this news has generated excitement among fans, it has also raised questions about the validity of a previous leak (reduced to a rumor now), which had many players anticipating a completely different crossover event.

Last month, dataminer @crashfty shared a tantalizing leak suggesting that a crossover with a certain Marvel character was in the works. The post included three different finisher moves performed by a stock character model, all executed in a style reminiscent of the Merc with a Mouth‘s signature flair.

Fans were quick to speculate that this collaboration would coincide with the upcoming release of Deadpool & Wolverine, set to hit theaters on July 26th. The timing seemed all too perfect, and many players were eagerly anticipating the chance to wield the fourth-wall-breaking superhero’s signature weapons in the fast-paced world of the hit FPS.

However, following the official WWE crossover announcement, @CODWarfareForum, who had also previously reported on the initial rumor, has offered a new perspective to Call of Duty fans:

The key detail that led to this speculation? The character in the video performs a little wave after finishing their opponent a gesture that bears a striking resemblance to the signature waves of WWE superstars Liv Morgan and Rhea Ripley.

While fans would have been thrilled to see Activision collaborate with Marvel’s fan-favorite antihero, it seems that this dream crossover may not come to fruition after all.

Unsurprisingly, the announcement of the WWE crossover has been met with mixed reactions from the community.

Some fans are thrilled to see their favorite wrestlers enter the fray, while others can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment that the initial “leak” may have been off the mark:

As the countdown to July 24th begins, fans are left to speculate about which WWE icons will make the cut and how their signature moves will be translated into the fast-paced environment of Activision’s lucrative FPS title. Will we see the likes of John Cena, The Rock, or The Undertaker gracing the battlefields of Warzone? Only time will tell!

But regardless of where you stand on the WWE vs. Marvel debate, one thing is certain: the upcoming Season 5 of Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone is shaping up to be a wild ride.
