The Counselor, directed by Ridley Scott, is based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel. The movie consists of a star-studded cast, including Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, and Penelope Cruz.
Still, it didn’t perform well at the domestic box office and received a low 37 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie is already infamous for Cameron Diaz’s s*x scene with a Ferrari. But, Diaz faced another challenge during the film’s production.
The actress’s character in the movie initially had a subtle Barbados accent, but she originally voiced it with a full-on Rihanna-style accent. Fox executives were not comfortable with this choice, and they made her redub her lines later. Despite these efforts, the film didn’t do well.
Cameron Diaz had to redub her lines due to an accent problem
Actress Cameron Diaz attracted a lot of attention (both good and bad) for her daring role in The Counselor. However, she had to face some challenges during its production because she had to redo her role in the movie. Why? Because, according to studio executives, she sounded too much like Rihanna.
She was supposed to have a gentle Barbados accent for her character. But, when the Fox execs listened to her performance, they were surprised that she sounded just like Rihanna (who has a strong accent). That’s the reason they made her re-record her lines.
Diaz (who was 41 years old at the time) played the character Malkina — a mean woman with a troubled history who is in a relationship with Reiner — the drug lord in the film. That’s not it for Diaz. The movie also had a s*x scene that involved the actress, which was too controversial.
Cameron Diaz’s Controversial Scene in The Counselor
The controversial s*x scene in The Counselor occurred in the middle of the golf course at night on top of Ferrari California HS. Malkina (Cameron Diaz) tells her drug-dealing lover Reiner (Bardem) that she wants to “f*ck [his] car.
She then proceeds to do exactly that while Reiner looks on in confusion. “It was too gynecological to be s*xy—almost,” Reiner said.
This controversial scene sparked debate, and many critics expressed concerns about its demeaning framing and underlying misogynistic elements. Although, it may have intended to convey something more complex than just mere objectification. However, the scene faced criticism for how it presented its content.
Besides this, the movie was highly anticipated because it brought together Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem (who are married) on screen for the first time since 2008’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona. It also reunited Brad Pitt with director Ridley Scott for the first time since 1991’s Thelma & Louise.
