In an interview with ComicBook, Grillo spilled the beans on why he made the switch. He felt like there was more to Crossbones than what Marvel showed. He disclosed,

“I think Crossbones serves a purpose, but I think the interesting thing is that if you see how many people around the world have responded to Crossbones, and again, he’s on the screen for a very short amount of time, I think there’s more there. I think there was more meat on the bone. I was disappointed, which is why I went over to DC.”

Disappointed by the lack of character development, he decided to give DC a try. The Boss Level star thinks Marvel missed a trick by not delving deeper into Crossbones’ story. He believes there was a lot more potential there. He stated,
