In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we have seen a lot of instances where a superhero can interact with another superhero without having to wait for a team-up film. Consider Anthony Mackie, who has been playing Falcon or Sam Wilson since Captain America: The Winter Soldier. In addition, it was reported that he was a potential addition to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Earlier, Eric Carroll, the Director of Development at Marvel Studios, revealed that Mackie’s Falcon would make his Captain America debut in Jon Watts’ 2019 film. Apart from what we have already seen in the promotional material, they later decided to let Peter Parker’s story stand alone in the film without much outside assistance.

Well, it is clear that Mackie was just having fun. The Crowded Room star did not directly contribute to the plot developments in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Even though it would be hilarious, that was not what actually happened.

With his appearances in Ant-Man and Avengers: Age of Ultron, Mackie has now essentially cemented his status as the king of one-scene ‘Avengers cameos’. Then, why was he absent from Jon Watts’ 2019 film?

Spider-Man: Far From Home is Spider-Man’s Journey’

In an interview with ComicBook, Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, and Eric Carroll, the director of development at Marvel Studios, disclosed that there had been some preliminary discussion about Anthony Mackie’s appearance in the closing moments of Avengers: Endgame. Carroll stated.

“We briefly talked about bringing in Falcon as Captain America at the end. Like, maybe once Peter’s arced, and he’s sort of like leading the team, maybe he calls in a favor.”

Carroll further explained why it was ultimately decided against the plan:

“It was really important to the arc of this movie that Nick Fury or Peter would have to step up and do it himself, so there would not be other Avengers available to him.”

Fans of the MCU would have been pleasantly surprised to see Anthony Mackie in the role of Captain America. But it is obvious that Marvel Studios and Sony had a plan for Peter Parker’s storyline, which featured more of a lone mission as Feige added:

“Ultimately, Spider-Man: Far From Home is Spider-Man’s journey, whether any other heroes appear in it or not. It’s all about Peter stepping up, ‘F’ And Peter getting out of the shadow, not just of Tony but of the Avengers in general. Because by the way, he’s Spider-Man. He doesn’t need to be in the shadow of the Avengers. So other than Maria, and Nick, and Happy, and the emotional presence of Tony… You hear, he asks about Thor. He asks about Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel.”

Anyway, the upcoming film, Captain America: Brave New World on Disney+ will star Mackie as Sam Wilson (Captain America), also starring Harrison Ford. The much-awaited film is scheduled for release on July 26, 2024.

While you wait, you can stream Spider-Man: Far From Home on Starz or DIRECTV.
