The last few months have been tumultuous for both the DC universe and Henry Cavill after he got snubbed away from his iconic roles. Not long after Cavill marked his grand return in the role of Superman through the post-credit scene of Black Adam, the actor was eventually axed from his iconic role.
Even though fans initially thought it was because of the change in leadership, it appears that it wasn’t James Gunn’s fault. And it seems that even before James Gunn took the command of DCU, WB didn’t consider Cavill in the bigger picture after his return in Black Adam.
James Gunn was already working on Superman: Legacy before the release of Black Adam
Not long after the return of Henry Cavill as Superman in the DC universe through his Cameo in Black Adam, the Man of Steel actor was axed from the role within two months of his arrival. And although it initially appeared that it was a result of the removal of the old regime, but it seems that Cavill was never considered in the bigger picture, to begin with.
In a recent tweet, James Gunn revealed that there was no Man of Steel 2 in the works and he was already associated with the Superman: Legacy project long before the release of Black Adam.
It was. I was hired to write Superman Legacy over six months ago.

And it has led people to believe that WB never had any bigger plans for Cavill’s Superman and even before James Gunn became the new CEO of DC, he knew that Cavill has no future in the new DCU.
Fans blame WB’s mismanagement and Henry Cavill’s luck for his axing from the role
Fans have been pretty furious since the axing of Cavill from the role of Superman and denounced James Gunn for the situation. But it seems that James Gunn was already deep into his project of delivering a new Superman even before he was the CEO and Cavill’s Cameo in Black Adam had no eventual purpose to serve. And fans are convinced that the eventual result was a culmination of WB’s mismanagement and Cavill’s terrible luck with choosing projects.
Gunn probably was as blindsided as anyone else. What's amusing to me though is that whoever lead Cavill on, it wasn't any of the "evil" execs that Snyder fans complained about for years.

Y'all.
The studio were playing their options. For one, Gunn presented a Superman reboot pitch. That went into development. For the other Cavill was brought in for the Black Adam cameo. A bigger success for BA would have meant Man of Steel 2.— Thaddeus📚Thomas (@thaddeusbooks) February 22, 2023
I mean it did happen he was back as Superman in Black Adam there was never any plan for him to do anything as that character beyond that.
