The histories of the four nations have been well explored in the world of Avatar, but there seems to be more to discover. Bryan Konietzko and Micahel Dante DiMartino, creators of the story, had a lot more to explore in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. This was especially true when it came to the confirmation of the relationship between Korra and Asami Sato, which was not only cemented by a Tumblr post by Konietzko but was also explored in the 2018 comic book continuation of The Legend of Korra, Turf Wars.
As the relationship between Korra and Asami Sato is explored in the pages of the follow-up comic book, Avatar has cemented other aspects of its world using the relationship that the comic books chose to depict. Characters talking about Korra and Asami’s relationship allowed them to talk about how different parts of the world of Avatar reacted to a relationship like there’s which revealed a key detail about the Air Nation, thanks to Aang’s daughter, Kya.
Aang’s daughter was an important figure for Korra and Asami.
It must be noted that the legitimacy of the relationship was established way before the comics were released in 2018. Bryan Konitezko himself took to his Tumblr in 2014 and declared it in no uncertain terms:
“Korrasami is canon. You can celebrate it, embrace it, accept it, get over it, or whatever you feel the need to do, but there is no denying it. That is the official story. We received some wonderful press in the wake of the series finale at the end of last week, and just about every piece I read got it right: Korra and Asami fell in love. Were they friends? Yes, and they still are, but they also grew to have romantic feelings for each other.”
Following this, the comic series Turf Wars, written by Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino fully explored what the relationship meant to the characters around Korra and Asami, with Aang’s daughter Kya being a particular voice of interest for the young women. Kya revealed that she herself had had multiple partners, both male, and female, and her father, Korra’s previous incarnation in Avatar Aang, was very open about it.

When Kya reveals that she and Korra and Asami have a lot in common, Korra was curious as to how Aang reacted to Kya’s sexuality, to which the older Waterbender confirmed that Aang was nothing but supportive.
It is here that it was revealed that while family units were not as well maintained among the Air Nomads, they did not take issue with romances blossoming among same-sex couples. Aang, being very proud of his Air Nation culture, was happy to share it with Kya, who in turn shared this wisdom with Korra and Asami.
It was also confirmed that most other nations had welcoming attitudes towards same-sex relationships. However, Fire Lord Sozin was responsible for putting an end to the tolerance, outlawing same-sex couples, a notion carried forward to the world when the Fire Nation conquered the four nations.
