There is no wonder how Chad Stahelski revolutionized Western action movies in the past decade. The John Wick franchise became its own universe, amassing millions of fans and becoming a global phenomenon. It even sets itself apart from other action films of the modern times.
The fourth installment was released in late March, followed by the spin-off The Continental that aired last September. So, is there more for Keanu Reeves to tell? Stahelski said he has “notebooks and notebooks” of ideas for future projects.
Chad Stahelski Has More Ideas For Future John Wick Sequels
In an interview with Inverse, former stuntman and director Chad Stahelski revealed that the John Wick movies get more “ridiculous” as they go. For example, he mentioned how absurd it is to kill 80 men over a dog. But still, they were in it for the long haul. He went on to describe each installment:
“You can see how the first one starts fairly grounded. The second one’s a rock opera, and the third one’s a kung fu classic. The fourth one is this weird Western samurai film. They get more ridiculous as you go. They get more anime as you go.”
In fact, Stahelski keeps a list of more outlandish plot ideas for future sequels, though he claims that he does not intend to milk the franchise just for money. He further added:
“I have notebooks and notebooks of sh*t behind me, John Wicks 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. We have ideas for days. We just don’t have the story locked. I have no interest in doing the cash grab of bringing John Wick back for something.”
According to the filmmaker, Keanu Reeves would do another one if they had a good script. They leave the story open-ended so they can always go back to it once they have figured out a way to bring the character back into the fold.
John Wick Director Reveals The Secret Of Action Movies
One notable thing about Chad Stahelski’s John Wick is the collaboration of various action stars, such as Donnie Yen, Scott Adkins, and Marko Zaror, who are professionally skilled in martial arts. The director shared in the same interview with Inverse what made him cast these actors:
“I would argue that it’s the story you tell before the action that makes the difference… You have to build these guys up, and you can’t just do that with something. So, I know when I’m writing a sequence, I know that’s the magic rule. I have to find people that build that up. So, my goal is always to sprinkle in these great performance guys.”
It was a great thing that the studio is very open and enthusiastic about Stahelski’s ideas for anything John Wick-related, even if they are not John Wick-centric. As the director is also busy with other projects outside the Wickverse, it may take a while before he finally comes up with a concrete plan for the Baba Yaga.
