The 25th GQ Men of the Year was a star-studded affair as usual, and Marvel veterans Charlie Cox and Andrew Garfield eventually found some time to catch up with each other. A lifetime ago, both these Brits started out together as aspiring actors, and are already known for their long-established friendship. And it wasn’t long before each found his way through Hollywood before ultimately landing under Marvel’s care.

As the evening proceeded and Charlie Cox walked onto the stage, he referenced Andrew Garfield’s innately diverse potential and his hoard of talent when he called the latter “One of, if not the greatest actor of our generation.” Cox further went on to jokingly call out the No Way Home actor for over-performing and adding “another sickeningly good year” to his never-ending list of achievements and for securing his legacy as the third greatest Spider-Man of all time.”

Andrew Garfield’s Lasting Legacy in Tick, Tick… Boom!

For Charlie Cox, the evening hosted by GQ had given him free rein over endlessly trolling Andrew Garfield and his galore of achievements. Considering how 2021 had been one of those years that kept on giving, Cox invoked Garfield’s performance in the film adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s tick, tick… Boom! by indirectly recounting a story from the yesteryears:

“A couple of years ago I was having a conversation with a friend of mine bemoaning the seemingly limitless talents of our friend, and the final man of the year tonight, Mr Andrew Garfield. I said ‘it’s really annoying, is there nothing he can’t do?’”

Apparently, the friend had told Cox about Garfield horribly tanking his Sweet Charity audition at drama school because the latter couldn’t sing “The Rhythm of Life,”  and this was top-tier intel for Cox as he revealed — “So you can imagine how thrilled we were when we found out he had committed himself to a project that couldn’t possibly succeed. The all-singing, all-dancing, Tick, Tick… Boom!”
