Ray Stevenson, the Irish actor who was slated to appear in the much-awaited Ahsoka series, passed away at 58. Perhaps known best for his work in notable films like 2008’s Punisher: War Zone and Kenneth Branagh’s 2011 film Thor, Stevenson died a few days ago amid the filming of his forthcoming movie, Cassino in Ischia.

Ray Stevenson’s Cause of Death Remains Undisclosed

According to Ray Stevenson’s representatives, the actor passed away on May 21, just four days before his 59th birthday. While details such as the cause and time of his death remain a mystery, the Rome star was hospitalized owing to a mysterious illness on the island of Ischia, where his latest project was in production as reported by Italian newspaper La Repubblica. Nevertheless, Stevenson’s unfortunate loss has left both fans and the industry in a state of shock and despair.

After working in numerous British television shows, Stevenson made his Hollywood debut with Paul Greengrass’ The Theory of Flight (1998) before launching his Marvel career with the comic book adaptation of Punisher: War Zone and the first three installments in the Thor franchise. The actor was also renowned for his contribution to historical dramas like King Arthur (2004), Paul W. S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers (2011), and the acclaimed television series titled Vikings.

The late MCU star also collaborated with many industry A-listers; he joined forces with action icon Bruce Willis and former professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson in G.I. Joe: Retaliation and worked with Top Gun: Maverick star Val Kilmer in 2011’s Kill the Irishman. Just last year, Stevenson starred in Martin Campbell’s action/thriller, Memory, along with Liam Neeson and Monica Bellucci.

The Late Actor Was Slated to Star in Cassino in Ischia & Ahsoka

Cassino in Ischia is an upcoming action venture helmed by Frank Ciota with Joseph A. Ciota serving as the writer. So far, the star cast involved Stevenson along with Miriam Candurro, and Carlotta Natoli. The late actor was supposed to lead the film as a disgraced action hero, struggling to revive his desiccated career after choosing acting and fame over his family.

Stevenson recently appeared in the Academy Award-winning Tollywood drama, RRR, and was also set to star in Disney’s much-anticipated Star Wars project, Ahsoka as the villain, Baylan Skoll. The late actor previously voiced Gar Saxon in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. 

Ahsoka will air on Disney + during this year’s fall.
