Chris Pine has starred in multiple hits. From Star Trek to The Princess Diaries, the actor has made his mark with audiences. Yet, it can’t be denied that he is probably most well-known globally for the Gal Gadot-led Wonder Woman (2017).

Yet, once upon a time, he could have worked beside an MCU powerhouse- Elizabeth Olsen, in a beloved film. While the role eventually went to one of Olsen’s Marvel co-stars, it certainly would have been interesting to see Pine with the Scarlet Witch. However, maybe doing that would have made him miss out on a role of a lifetime.

Wind River (2017) stars Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen. The Taylor Sheridan-directed film grossed $45 million against a $11 million budget. However, once upon a time, it was a real possibility that instead of Renner, Chris Pine would do the lead role of Cory Lambert. IndieWire even announced that casting too.

The reason Renner had declined was because he was starring in Arrival (2016) at that time. So Pine was offered the role, and he accepted. However, he, later on, dropped out of the project to star in Wonder Woman (2017), which grossed 822 million worldwide and was a watershed moment for DC films and female-led superhero movies.

However, eventually, the Hawkeye star’s schedule opened up, and he was able to star in the movie. As for Pine, he probably made the right decision to star in the acclaimed and beloved first Wonder Woman film with Gal Gadot. The sequel is, however, another story.

Does Chris Pine Have A Future In James Gunn’s DCU Or Wonder Woman 3?

As of now, it looks like James Gunn is all in on rebooting the DCU. The speculated underwhelming box office gross of Ezra Miller’s The Flash is probably only going to make WBD fast-track those plans. As such, it looks like Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, let alone Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor, will probably not be in the plans.

In an interview with USA Today, when Pine was asked about the possibility of him returning, he said, “I think poor Steve is dead, but I wish them all the best on the third one.” If Wonder Woman 1984 had critically and commercially succeeded, a third movie might have still been a possibility. However, its abject failure closed the doors completely.

Even Gal Gadot didn’t include Wonder Woman 3 when she was asked what her professional future will bring, by Total Film. She said:

“To me, starting and developing stories that I’m passionate about is an incredible thing. The fact that I don’t have to sit still at home and just wait for the next offer is something that makes me feel empowered. I enjoy doing it, it keeps me alive. I’m not only going to do my own projects, I’m going to work as an actress-for-hire still.”

As such, it looks like the cast has moved on, and Gunn will probably bring in a new actress to play the character of Diana Prince in the future.

Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984 are streaming on HBO Max.
