The Legacy Of Michael Keaton’s Batman

Batman is one of the most popular superheroes in the world and has been adapted by many actors over the years, in animation as well as live-action. The first live-action Batman was played by Lewis Wilson in the 1943 TV series Batman, and Adam West had a considerable fan following for his campy and kid-friendly version of Bruce Wayne.

However, it was Michael Keaton’s portrayal of the caped crusader in Tim Burton’s Batman that put the character in mainstream cinema and took him away from the camp image he had with West’s film and TV show. Keaton crafted the broody and troubled Bruce Wayne fans know today, and the setting itself was more true to the darkness of the comics.

The actor reprised his role in Batman Returns and was then replaced by Val Kilmer and then George Clooney in subsequent Burton-inspired Batman films by Joel Schumacher. Keaton also came back as an older Batman in last year’s The Flash along with Ben Affleck and Clooney. Keaton’s portrayal is still considered to be one of the best iterations of the superhero.

After George Clooney’s Bruce Wayne in Batman & Robin tanked at the box office (and is still trolled), the future of the character was unsure. While many iterations tried to take off, including a version by Darren Aronofsky, the character received a much-needed update with Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, which had Christian Bale don the cowl.

Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne was the broodiest of all, troubled by his parents’ death, self-trained by entering the crime world and then being trained by the League of Shadows. He comes back to Gotham with a zeal to clean up the city once and for all. Bale played the character in the sequels The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

The trilogy focused on not just Batman’s fight against his rogue’s gallery and for justice but also Bruce Wayne’s growth from being a vigilante to a hero. Christian Bale became the face of the character for seven years and was the defining Batman in the 2000s. Until Robert Pattinson’s The Batman, he was the last actor to have a solo Batman film.

Ben Affleck’s Batman was short-lived but was still an impactful portrayal. The actor made his debut in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and would go on to appear in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The actor had several cameos but finally stepped down after the DCU was rebooted by James Gunn.

Who Is The Best Batman?

While every iteration has its fans, it has still been impossible to reach a conclusion on the best cinematic portrayal of Batman. Ben Affleck’s Batman seems to be the most polarizing performance so far, much like the Zack Snyder films he was a part of, but the actor nevertheless seems to have proved many of his naysayers wrong.

Christian Bale and Michael Keaton seem to have attained legendary status. Many fans were overjoyed when Keaton reprised his role in the multiversal film The Flash. While the film was a box office disaster, the actor’s portrayal was lapped up by fans with sweet nostalgia. The Washington Post spoke highly of Keaton in their review of The Flash,

“The pain of all that what-ifing for those of us who still listen to Danny Elfman’s Batman score when we drive to Costco shockingly subsides when you once again gaze at Keaton as the bat in high definition on a big screen in “The Flash.”…it is impossible to deny the feeling of ‘I thought I’d never get to see this again.’”

Fans on X still seem to have a heated debate on the billion-dollar question of whether Christian Bale, Michael Keaton, or Ben Affleck is the best Brice Wayne.

While the latest Batman to don the cowl, Robert Pattinson was lauded for his iteration, he is still one film old and is yet to prove that he can bring in the nuance one more time in The Batman Part II.
