Meanwhile, her 2023 groundbreaking show The Curse caught people’s attention, all over again, after it gained a new fan. Well, it’s none other than the renowned filmmaker Christopher Nolan.
Appreciating Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie’s Paramount+ show The Curse starring Emma Stone, Christopher Nolan expressed his love for the rule-breaking TV series. Although the show is deemed as a wildly audacious, uncomfortable watch for common audiences, Nolan seemed to prove his impeccable taste, after he praised Fielder and Safdie’s new Showtime series The Curse.

Emma Stone’s groundbreaking satire show The Curse follows a married couple, Asher (Nathan Fielder) and Whitney (Stone), whose relationship, alongside their new HGTV reality show, topples due to an alleged curse. While the synopsis sounds too simple, the show tends to frequently delve into the unexplainable.
Christopher Nolan Held The Curse in High Regard
The particularly absurd nature of Emma Stone’s The Curse is what attracted Christopher Nolan to it. So much so that the filmmaker went out of his way to hold a 25-minute SHOWTIME Q&A panel with Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, to share his biggest compliment. Claiming that “It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen on television before” Nolan proceeded to compare The Curse with other seminal series like Twin Peaks.
“It’s an incredible show, and it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen on television before. There are so few shows that come along that have genuinely no precedence. You’re going back to things like ‘Twin Peaks,’ or ‘The Prisoner,’ or Dennis Potter’s ‘Singing Detective’ and things like that, so you’re in an amazing space, and I can’t wait to catch up with the climax.”
After appreciating the show, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker further proceeded to praise Emma Stone, who is the hot topic of this year following her Oscar-nominated film Poor Things. Appreciating her riveting performance in the show, followed by the “lack of vanity” in her portrayal, Christopher Nolan held her in high regard.
“[I] want to talk about Emma Stone. And Whitney, because it’s—she’s absolutely, I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say, as the series develops, she can be pretty maddening at times, in a very credible way. The performance I think, is absolutely amazing and wonderful. She’s totally in it. And there is an absolute lack of, I mean, for a star to play a part with an absolute lack of vanity, and no apander to the audience. No appealing to the audience.”
Following Christopher Nolan’s appreciation and compliments for The Curse, we believe the filmmaker is indeed right. Benny Safdie’s work and Nathan Fielder’s genuine comedic genius birthed a show that resulted in the truly singular experience as described by Nolan.
