Christopher Nolan’s 2014 sci-fi drama Interstellar remains one of the best movies to ever release in the genre. On top of having Nolan as the director, the film featured the ever-so-talented Matthew McConaughey as the lead.
While the film had a star-studded cast, one thing that makes it a timeless classic is the epic sound mix. Even in 2023, there aren’t many movies in the industry that have surpassed the phenomenal yet loud background music throughout the film.
Christopher Nolan was Criticized by Other Filmmakers for his Sound Mix in Interstellar
Christopher Nolan is known for his ability to deliver quality movies regardless of the genre, but when Interstellar was released, not many shared the same vision as the decorated director.
Nolan revealed that he received a lot of complaints from other filmmakers in the industry for his bold sound mix in an excerpt from the book The Nolan Variations: The Movies, Mysteries, and Marvels of Christopher Nolan (via Indiewire).
We got a lot of complaints. I actually got calls from other filmmakers who would say, ‘I just saw your film, and the dialogue is inaudible.’ Some people thought maybe the music’s too loud, but the truth was it was kind of the whole enchilada of how we had chosen to mix it. It was a very, very radical mix. I was a little shocked to realize how conservative people are when it comes to sound.
As it turns out, Nolan’s decision to have Hans Zimmer compose the soundtrack album for Interstellar paid off. The movie’s main theme, S.T.A.Y., is more than enough to send shivers down the spine of the audience regardless of how many times they may rewatch the film.
Keeping that in mind, it’s no surprise that Nolan was shocked after receiving negative feedback from other directors in the industry. At the end of the day, Interstellar remains one of the best projects that Nolan has ever been a part of during his career.
Timothée Chalamet Cried After Watching Interstellar
The 2014 blockbuster film mostly gained attention due to Christopher Nolan’s epic direction and Matthew McConaughey’s excellent acting. However, apart from them, a young Timothée Chalamet was also part of the film.
Chalamet played the role of Cooper’s son in the film. One may wonder what made Chalamet cry after landing a role in one of the biggest blockbusters of the year. Well, the answer is quite simple as Chalamet’s role didn’t seem significant enough to him as compared to others.
At the time, the Call Me by Your Name star was just 19 years old and trying to find his way into Hollywood. Keeping that in mind, it’s no surprise that he was shocked after not finding his performance excellent in Interstellar.
