Thus, setting an example for generations to come, this film not only raised the bar on the critical scale through the eyes of critics and journalists but also managed to become a smashing success at the box office with a total grossing figure of $959 Million. This was the first time in almost a decade that an almost billion dollar movie managed to bag the Best Picture category.

But this wasn’t the only milestone that was achieved that night. In fact, Christopher Nolan, with his film Oppenehiemer, managed to win the coveted Best Picture award, making it the first major cinematic blockbuster to have won in this category in the last decade.

If we look at the history of the winners of this category from the past decade, films like Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite and Peter Farrelly’s Green Book were the only films that grossed more than $200 Million at the box office while the rest were critically praised to extremes, but didn’t do so well on the commercial scale.

This changed when Oppenheimer won the Best Picture award after grossing a staggering $959 million at the box office.

Thus, the streak of award-winning films not being able to do well on the commercial scale despite being a cinematic masterpiece was finally broken at the 2024 Academy Awards. This was also the reason why this year’s ceremony was so highly viewed as people who witnessed Cillian Murphy‘s performance in the movie were excited and in anticipation of the fate that awaited it.

Along with Murphy winning his first-ever Academy Award for Best Actor, co-star Robert Downey Jr. won his first-ever Best Supporting Actor award. But more impactful than that was Nolan himself winning his first Oscar for Best Director in this film after eight nominations in total in his career.

Along with Best Picture, the film also won Best Cinematography, which went to Hoyte van Hoytema, and Best Film Editing which was received by Jennifer Lame, while Ludwig Emil Tomas Göransson took home the Best Original Score for providing the memorable music for the film.
