Game of Thrones star Ciarán Hinds admits feeling of repulsion concerning the number of s*x scenes in the hit HBO fantasy series. The show has been criticized for its excessive nudity and obscene content, although despite this, it remains one of the most successful flagship shows of the network.

Several celebrities have also expressed their discontent with the way these intimate scenes were handled and interpreted in the show. Emilia Clarke, who portrayed Daenerys Targaryen, has openly revealed the traumatic consequences she had to bear following her nude scenes.

Game of Thrones’ Ciarán Hinds Is Not A Fan Of The Show’s Sexual Content

In an interview with The Independent, Ciarán Hinds, who played the King Beyond the Wall Mance Rayder, commented on the show:

I was rather put off by the amount of s*xuality that was going on in it, because it was taking away from the actual political storytelling. But that’s business, I guess, from their perspective.”

The series prequel, House of the Dragon, was much more fairly received by fans in terms of sexual interpretations. Game of Thrones sustained a bad name on this subject, and so intimacy coordinator Miriam Lucia helped the cast of HOTD to deal with and cope with it. She told Deadline:

‘Game Of Thrones’ had a negative reputation – which they’ll admit — in terms of the press and the #MeToo movement, and with Emilia Clarke and other actors talking about how difficult and gratuitous it could be at times, and how much pressure they felt.”

Lucia shared that the production team for HOTD was more sensitive and aware of the repercussions. She added:

I think what you get on ‘House of the Dragon’ is not only a production team that are sensitive to that, but you get a cast that is very aware of it and careful about what they will agree to. That precedent had been set.”

Sexual content has always been a delicate topic in the entertainment industry. It has been a part of the series and, according to Lucia, a “part of the essence of what it is,” although in the 21st century, there are rules and boundaries.

She has been with the cast from the beginning, “involved in rehearsals, discussions, read-throughs,” and she guided the actors every step of the way.

Ciarán Hinds admitted he was hesitant to join the HBO series, where he appeared from Season 2 to 5, because of the abundance of s*x scenes. However, he has acknowledged the fact that it is part of the job. Hinds is set to appear in the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

With regards to the intimacy and nudity featured in Game of Thrones, Sean Bean dissed hiring intimacy coordinators like Miriam Lucia because, according to the Ned Stark actor, they ruin the spontaneity. He told U.K.’s Times Magazine (via Variety):

It would spoil the spontaneity. I think the natural way lovers behave would be ruined by someone bringing it right down to a technical exercise.”

Lucia responded to this claim and said that the actor has an old-fashioned way of thinking.

I just think he is a man of a certain age, who has been in this industry for a very long time, and he doesn’t have an experience of the other side.”

Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are shows cut from the same cloth, although the latter has proved to be more aware of its implications both on the actors’ part and the society that consumes its content.
