The film industry is so vast and giant in proportion that thousands of films are produced every year all over the world, yet only a handful of them are renowned worldwide for their creation. And with the recent release of the long-awaited war/drama film Oppenheimer, director Christopher Nolan has yet again proved why his films are one of a kind.
With a mind-bending narrative style and exceptional direction and execution of every shot, the reception that it has been getting seems deserving to say the least. But along with all the positive reviews and rantings, the film has also managed to grab some negative attention from one of the biggest markets that Hollywood caters to.
The S*x Scene In Oppenheimer Manages To Offend Indian Viewers
During the production of a film, it is quite uncertain what kind of reception it will receive from the audience after its release, therefore, chances need to be taken in order to maintain the vision of the story that is to be told. In accordance with that fact, legendary filmmaker Christopher Nolan brought us his latest cinematic masterpiece in the form of Oppenheimer, which contains every aspect of the titular physicist’s life in its raw glory. But seems like somewhere along the creative expression, the director managed to offend one of his biggest markets.

In one of the scenes, we see Cillian Murphy, who plays the role of the titular scientist engage in an intimate scene with Florence Pugh, who plays the role of his on-screen lover Jean Tatlock. While the scene would’ve been viewed as an artistic expression, the particular scene also features the Bhagwad Geeta, one of the holy books in Hinduism. Therefore, this particular shot has managed to offend many of its Indian audiences, some of who have been threateningly vocal about it. Uday Mahurkar, founder of Save Culture Save India Foundation, wrote a letter to the director, saying:
“We do not know the motivation and logic behind this unnecessary scene on life of a scientist, But this is a direct assault on religious beliefs of a billion tolerant Hindus, rather it amounts to waging a war on the Hindu community and almost appears to be part of a larger conspiracy by anti-Hindu forces. We urge, on behalf of billion Hindus and timeless tradition of lives being transformed by revered Geeta, to do all that is needed to uphold dignity of their revered book and remove this scene from your film across world,”
Along with this official letter, many Hindus and nationals of India have also raised this issue on various social media platforms

What Is The Significane Of The Geeta In Oppenheimer?
While many may question the reason why was something so controversial added to the film in the first place, they have to keep in mind that J. Robert Oppenheimer was an intellectual that coveted knowledge, no matter in what shape or form. Being an enthusiast of the ancient Hindu texts, the scientist kept the Geeta in high regard as one of the places he sought to understand the world from, even so far as to quote a line from the texts, claiming he had become the destroyer of worlds when he witnessed the devasting power of the atomic bomb he created.
