28 Years Later, an upcoming zombie film trilogy that fans have been clamoring for 17 years is finally becoming a reality. However, the long-awaited announcement of the new trilogy had some disappointing news. Cillian Murphy, who starred in the original movie, 28 Days Later, and an executive producer of the film will not be a part of the first film.
Even though Danny Boyle and Alex Garland have put their project as one of the hottest upcoming films in Hollywood, fans are quite disappointed with Murphy’s absence in the first film. While the Oppenheimer actor will not be a part of the first film, fans of the upcoming post-apocalyptic film should not be disappointed as there’s some positive news for them. Though absent from the first film, he is going to be a part of the sequels.
Cillian Murphy Would Potentially Appear in the Sequels of the Fresh Trilogy Titled 28 Years Later
Following on from 28 Days Later (2002), and 28 Weeks Later (2007), 28 Years Later is finally happening, and it will be the third film in the series, leading to a trilogy of its own. The long-awaited cast for the upcoming film has finally been announced, featuring Jodie Comer, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. However, fans of the franchise are quite disappointed as Cillian Murphy’s name was not mentioned in the cast list of the film.
Nevertheless, fans should not be disappointed because World of Reels reports that Jeff Sneider, one of the most reliable scoopers in the industry reports that Murphy will be a part of the second film “in a notable cameo,” and “will play a major role in the third one.”
Even though this has not been confirmed officially Murphy’s presence would immensely help the new trilogy to become a smash-hit blockbuster. The Peaky Blinders actor is one of the hottest names in the industry at the moment following his Oscar win for the Best Actor category. Nevertheless, the actor has openly commented about his potential return to the new trilogy.
Cillian Murphy is Available for 28 Years Later
Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of Jim in the 2002 zombie film, 28 Days Later was chilling as the actor showcased Jim’s disorientation and vulnerability, as he woke up from a coma to find London deserted and overrun by zombies. The character was bewildered and in disbelief as he grappled with the collapse of society.
With the actor possibly returning in the 2nd and 3rd films, the actor told Variety how “I’m available” to be a part of the franchise and he would love to return as Jim. This struck as an unofficial confirmation to many fans, that the actor would indeed return to the franchise and is interested in taking part in Boyle and Garland’s sequels.
Being an Oscar winner would immensely add to the film’s success as Murphy was outstanding in his role and fans of the franchise would love to see him return and fight off the infected in a post-apocalyptic London and witness his struggle for survival.
The film is set to have a potential budget of $60 million, with its plot, characters, and release date kept under wraps from the fans of the franchise. Although it is not concrete, Deadline reports that the project will start filming later this year, with back-to-back filming with the first film. If that is the case, then, the film hints at a potential late 2025 release date or an early summer 2026 release date.
28 Years Later does not have an official release date yet.
