”I think Chris’ skill at casting is something that people don’t quite talk enough about, he’s always been genius at casting his films, kind of in an unexpected way and he doesn’t go the conventional way in casting and I think it’s always worked out for him.”

In an interview with ObserverStranger Things star Michael Modine discussed his experience working with Christopher Nolan on Oppenheimer. When Modine asked about the project, Nolan mentioned casting mostly unknown actors, with the exception of Cillian Murphy in the role of Oppenheimer.

Just to get a sense of Christopher Nolan, when I asked him about participating, he said, “We’re casting a bunch of unknowns. The only person that you know is Cillian [Murphy], who’s playing Oppenheimer.” I knew Cillian and hadn’t worked with him, but we were in the same movie, The Dark Knight Rises. He’s a wonderful actor.”

As the production unfolded, Modine discovered that many of the “unknowns” were seasoned actors and individuals he had known or admired, including Kenneth Branagh, Robert Downey Jr., and Matt Damon. Modine credited the appeal of working with Nolan and his wife, Emma Thomas, as they were not only great filmmakers but also kind and smart individuals that people naturally wanted to collaborate with.

”And then you get closer to going to work and all of the unknowns are people that you’ve known or worked with or people you admire, from Kenneth Branagh to Robert Downey Jr. to Matt Damon. I mean, it was ridiculous. But that’s a testament to Emma [Thomas], Christopher’s wife, and Christopher. They’re such lovely people. They’re so kind and smart and obviously great filmmakers that these are folks people want to work with.”

We will have to wait and see what’s next in store for Christopher Nolan, as he truly ended 2023 on a big note thanks to the immense success of Oppenheimer commercially as well as being part of pop culture in general.
