The Classic Call of Duty Revival Continues as they Top UK Charts Again

The resurgence of Call of Duty on Xbox 360 continues as Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops 2 both reach the top of the UK charts. A Games Industry.biz report shows that Black Ops 2 (2012) ranked fifth on the list of best-selling games for July, while Modern Warfare 2 (2009) came in at number four.

The titles are only behind Red Dead Redemption 2, Grand Theft Auto 5 and FIFA 23 which were in first, second, and third place, respectively, and always sell a lot each month. A recent Xbox sale must have helped these sales as shoppers seek out iconic games to enjoy on their purchased consoles.

Another cause may have been the wave of renewed interest in classic games brought about by a supposed update to the servers that would improve the online experience of the titles. Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops 2, alongside Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops, Black Ops 3, and World at War with this renewal, have risen in the list of paid Xbox games, surpassing titles such as Hogwarts Legacy, Elden Ring and even the reboot of Modern Warfare 2 (2022) from the franchise itself.

And the last but not least possible reason would be the recent reveal of the Modern Warfare 3 reboot, which should be released on November 10th of this year. Leaks also revealed some details like some weapons and a full and definitive reveal is set to happen within Call of Duty: Warzone on August 17th.

The Call of Duty franchise is undoubtedly one of the most popular and influential in the gaming world, but it has continually faced criticism over its lack of original ideas. Over the years, the series has been known for its annual releases, often retaining similar or even the same gameplay mechanics, settings, and themes. This tedious consistency has led fans, players, and critics alike to question whether the franchise was just lying on the bed of money and sparing no effort to bring something new to the table.

Both the technical part and the narrative are targets of critics for exploring scenarios of military conflicts, whether futuristic, modern, or historical wars that do not have a unique style among them. Despite the impressive graphics and immersive gameplay, this does not save the series from saturation with each new release, especially for those who play regularly.

Even so, it is worth mentioning that the franchise had its moments of effort to change things, as was the case with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Call of Duty: Warzone which introduced historical scenarios and competitive multiplayer that brought a freshness, but it wasn’t the series savior that executives had hoped for. Despite everything, it is to be expected that the developers of the franchise’s games continue to achieve the most important thing, to entertain the players, but also, that somehow they manage to renew the franchise once and for all like God of War and The Legend of Zelda made.
