JJ Abrams, who was inspired to make this movie, git Matt Reeves to direct Cloverfield even before the script was finished. Even the actors who auditioned for the movie did not know which project they were auditioning for. Most actually thought they were auditioning for Star Trek, and only found out after getting their parts in the project, that they were part of a monster movie and not a sci-fi one.

Star Trek Bait for Cloverfield

When auditioning for Cloverfield began, the movie had no title and even the script was unfinished. JJ Abrams, who had worked with Drew Goddard in Alias and Lost, got the screenwriter for the Cloverfield job, and then persuaded Matt Reeves to join the project, who liked the challenge of directing a work-in-progress script.

The actors who auditioned thought they were auditioning for Star Trek. This was because JJ Abrams, who was the man behind Cloverfield‘s idea and joined the project as a producer, was announced to remake Star Trek just recently. It was only later that work on the sci-fi movie began with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto in the lead. Many other actors like Zoe Saldana, Benedict Cumberbatch, John Cho, etc also joined the franchise with time.

The Innovative Concept of Filming

The movie was mainly shot on the found-footage concept and was shot by actor T. J. Miller, whose character Hud was seen filming most of the footage in the movie. He was hired by Reeves because of his ability to improvise. The actors auditioned with the script of Alias, as the script of Cloverfield was still unfinished, and the movie was kept under wraps for the most part.

The movie was also filmed without a background score and used quality sound designing to give the movie and intense feeling. It was only later, after the movie’s first cut was done editing, that Reeves got composer Michael Giacchino to score the end credit of the movie, titled Roar. Matt Reeves found fame after the movie became a hit, and has since gone on to make numerous other movies, including The Batman.
